They believed me, or maybe they didn’t, but they let it go.

“Don’t worry, bubble gum,” dad spoke up. “You’ve got this. You always have and I’m sure that you would ace your finals.”

“We believe in you and we’re proud of you,” mom added.

I flashed them a fake smile and swallowed the bile that had risen to my throat. After that, we fell into an uncomfortable silence and I tried my best to eat so that I wouldn’t make them suspicious again.

I picked at my food and after a while, I just dropped it. My father was done eating so he offered to drop me off.

I accepted and we left. We talked in the car, nothing too deep, just music, classes, exams and how he misses when I used to tell him everything. I laughed at something he said and for the time in days, my shoulders loosened up and I felt lighter.

For a fleeting moment, I believed that I actually might be okay but all my hope vanished into thin air when I got to school.

As my father parked the car and I made to get down, I heard a voice call my name. “Ava!”

Kye’s voice cut through the parking lit as I opened the door and my body immediately went stiff.

He was leaning against his car, looking like he always did… effortless, unreadable and dangerous. His bruises were fading, but I still remembered seeing him bloodied that night and how his knuckles dropped reed as he looked at me like it didn’t hurt.

“Who’s that?” My father asked, his voice cutting through my mind.

“Just a friend,” I replied quickly… too quickly.

He nodded big there was something about the look on his face that said he had filed that away from later.

I got out of the car even if I didn’t want to. I wanted to run in the opposite direction but Kye was already walking towards me. His walk was always the same… slow and deliberate like he owned the space around him.

I silently prayed that my father left before Kye got to me and fortunately for me, he did.

“Did you dad ask about me?” He murmured,

He tilted his head and smiled like he knew that I wouldn’t win this no matter how much I begged. “You’ve never skipped school before, I know. But there’s a first time for everything.”

“Kye, Liam is watch—“

“Save it. I don’t care.”

Before I could say anything else, he pulled me agai, not hard but with enough pressure to tell me that it wasn’t a request. I looked over my shoulder just as I was getting into his car and then I heard the worst sound I could hear in that moment.

“Ava!”

It was Liam and he came out of the school, limping towards us with anger written all over his face.

I panicked but Kye didn’t. He turned on the engine and he pulled out of the parking lot before Liam could get close enough to us. My stomach was in knots and my heart was pounding so hard that I felt it would burst.

What the hell happened to Laim and why is he limping?
