I changed my mission. She was never going to respond to force and I should have known that. I should have realized that night when I pressed her against the wall… from the way her body tensed under mine, not from fear but in defiance. Ava wasn’t one to crumble… she got stronger in situations like this. Which is fucking weird.

So if I wanted her… I mean if I really wanted to have her, I needed to stop trying to break her and instead start making her want me. I had to make her fall in love with me. Stupid right?

As stupid and sentimental as my new plan sounded, I knew it was the fastest way to get her, plus it was the only shot I had. Blackmail got me her body, but didn’t get me her smile. And I wanted that damn smile. I should have known it wouldn’t work.

I was still thinking about it after school… thinking of how to play the new angle when I saw Liam. I should have known he would be the one person who worked against me and who would stop Ava from falling for me and he wasn’t even being subtle about it.

I was headed to practice but I could see him speaking in hushed tones with Asher in a shadowy corner near the bleachers, like some wannabe criminals and that caught my interest.

They couldn’t see me because they were too busy whisper yelling at each other like high school amateurs. What the hell is wrong with them?

I slowed my steps and walked closer to them, just enough to catch a few words.

“Are you sure about this?” Asher asked, his brows furrowed and Liam nodded without hesitation.

“It’s the only way,” he muttered, sounding bored, like he had repeated they answer more times than he cared to count.

“I still don’t know, man,” Asher pressed, running his hand through his hair. “Is Ava okay with it?”

Is Ava okay with what? What the hell are they going on about?
