I knew today was the day. I could practically feel it in my chest and in the way it tightened every time I looked at the small bottle Liam had pressed into my palm that morning. Once it’s done, I’ll finally be able to breathe better.
“It will knock him out, maybe an hour tops,” he said, his voice low like someone might be listening even though we were in my room and no one else was home. “He won’t remember much after, but you have to be careful. Drop the whole thing into his drink, don’t pour half and don’t try to guess the dose.”
I stared at the capsule, it looked too small to hold the kind of power I was counting on. Is this thing really effective? I thought to myself but I didn’t say anything. My mouth suddenly started feeling dry.
“Are you sure this would work? And is it safe?” I asked. I hated how uncertain I sounded. If I was being honest with myself, I was scared to bits and I didn’t want to drug Kye but I guess it's all his fault for ruining my life and making me a shell of who I used to be.
Liam signed. “It’s not about it being safe, Ava,” Liam snapped, sounding frustrated. “It’s about it being what’s necessary. We need that video, Ava. And without it, we have nothing to go to the coups with. It’s the one thing tying him to the party. It’s why he fucking owns you.”
I flinched.
He noticed. “I’m sorry,” he apologized, his voice softer. “But we can’t play nice anymore.”
I nodded once. There was no pointing in pretending that I wasn’t scared in front of Liam. I was terrified, but the fear hadn’t helped me when I was being blackmailed into sex. The fear hadn’t protected me from nights where I cried myself to sleep, or mornings where I smiled through the ache between my thighs. So quite frankly? Fear could go to hell.
“Okay,” I finally said. “I’ll do it.”
Liam handed me a sealed water bottle. “Slip it in when he’s distracted. And Ava…” he paused. “I’ll be close. I’m going to be following you and if anything goes wrong, I’ll be there.”
I nodded and I took in a deep breath to calm myself because I knew he meant it. I saw it in his eyes but that didn’t make my stomach any less twisted as I left the house and walked straight into the lion’s den.
