I swallow hard, my throat thick with emotions I don’t know how to process. My eyes sting, and I blink rapidly, refusing to let tears fall.

“You make it sound so easy,” I whisper.

“It’s not easy,” he says honestly. “But having you by my side will make it all worth it.”

For a long moment, silence stretches between us, filled only by the sound of crickets and the crackle of lantern flames. Then, slowly, Alec reaches across the table. His hand finds mine, rough and warm, his thumb brushing soothing circles over my skin.

It’s such a small gesture, yet it unravels me. I don’t pull away.

Instead, I let myself look at him. Really look at him. The alpha, the man, the wolf who has been patient, who has changed, who has been an anchor since I came back to this pack.

My fear is still there. Still lingering like a shadow that won’t let go, but the big part? It’s starting to accept this. To accept Alec. To hope that this might just work.

Have I forgiven him? I don’t know, but like Nyx once told me, healing is a slow process and I have to let it happen. That’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to allow Alec in and maybe, just maybe, we can slowly start healing.

We talk more after that. About Aspen, about the pack, even about little things that make us laugh. The walls between us feel thinner, fragile, and almost ready to crumble.

At some point, Alec stands and moves around the table. He crouches beside me, his hand still holding mine.

I look at him in surprise, my mind racing, wondering what he’s up to.

His other hand reaches up, brushing a strand of hair from my face. His eyes search mine with an intensity that makes my heart trip over itself.

“Sadie,” he murmurs, “Right here on my knees, I make a vow. That’ll love you. I’ll treasure you and I’ll make sure you never have a reason to regret me as your mate. I broke your heart once, over and over again… but I promise that from this day forth, I’ll spend the rest of my life mending it, until it’s whole again.”

I lean in again, about to kiss him when his phone rings. He takes it and looks at the screen before hanging up.

He’s about to put it back into his pocket when the shrill ring cuts through the night.

His fist clenches as he looks at the screen again. I know he’s about to hang up again, but I stop him.

“Answer it; maybe it important” I say, throat suddenly dry.

He clenches his jaw and then swipes on the screen. “This better be fucking important.”

“You need to get back to the pack now!” I can hear Micah’s voice over the phone, but that’s not what has me worried. It’s the panic, confusion and maybe just a little bit of fear that are etched in his voice.
