“I know.”

“I just… don’t want to fall into something that’s going to break me again.”

His expression shifted, eyes softening in a way that made my chest tighten.

“I’m not asking you to fall,” he said, voice low. “Just… walk with me. Because I believe that it is going to be a little joyous of a ride. We just have to allow ourselves to give in to it.”

By the time we pulled up to the estate, the sun had dipped completely below the horizon, casting long shadows across the house. The pack was quiet, still. Most were finishing their duties or already inside for the night.

But when we stepped inside, I knew immediately where we were going.

The nursery.

Damon didn’t say a word, he just led the way, his stride purposeful but unhurried. I followed him upstairs, my steps slowing as we approached the soft yellow glow spilling from the half-open door.

Inside, I found her.

Isla.

Swaddled in one of the soft little blankets I’d spent days hand-sewing while I was pregnant. Her tiny fists were curled near her face, her nose scrunched slightly as she dreamed. Alpha Kael and Luna Evelyn were seated in the room, Alpha Kael rocking gently in the chair while Evelyn whispered something under her breath.

She looked up first, eyes softening the moment she saw us.

“She’s had a good day,” Evelyn said, her tone kinder than I expected. “Didn’t cry much. Took her bottles well. She seems to have enjoyed her day with her grandparents even.”

She looked at her maid for a moment and the small smile formed on her lips before she turned her attention to Damon.

I nodded, stepping inside slowly. “Thank you… for staying with her.”

Kael stood, nodding once to his son. “You’re back later than I expected. And the two of you managed to do it without having one another’s heads. That is something that I find amusing and satisfying.”

Damon glanced at me before answering. “We needed the time. Plus, we are adults, We wouldn’t have each other’s heads over lunch.”

“Considering that it’s way past sundown, I doubt that it was simply lunch, but I will choose to let that pass.” Alpha Kael said, giving a small smirk.

Something real.

“I think she’s starting to like me,” he said. “Even in her sleep she seems to be reacting to my touch. Much like other people that we know that wouldn’t admit it out loud.”

I blushed at his comments before looking away from him. A small smile formed on his lips when the two of us looked one another in the eye. I goofed, lost in his gaze, and I could tell that he was lost in mine.

“She always did,” I whispered. And I knew that I wasn’t just talking about her. He was not simply referring to our daughter either.

We stood in silence, just the three of us.

For the first time… it felt like something whole.

Something possible.

And maybe, just maybe… something worth holding onto.
