Cynthia had just taken a step to leave when a surprised voice called out from nearby.

“Cyndi? Benedict?”

She turned toward the sound and saw Janice jogging over, her face bright with curiosity.

Benedict’s gaze shifted in the same direction, but Cynthia didn’t miss the flash of tension in his eyes—or the way he subtly edged away as Janice approached.

Janice reached Cynthia first, looping her arm through hers and lowering her voice. “Did you and Benedict have a fight?”

Cynthia didn’t pull away. Instead, she met Benedict’s eyes coldly, daring him to look away. “A fight? He was practically trying to kidnap me.”

Janice’s concern shifted to Benedict. She started to scold him, but the words caught in her throat when she saw the blood-stained bandage on his forehead. Her eyes widened in shock and she instantly let go of Cynthia, stepping closer to him. “What happened to you? Are you hurt?”

Benedict dodged her touch, his brows drawn tight, sending her a silent, warning glare.

Janice froze, stung by his wary expression. She bit her lip, something wounded flickering in her eyes, but she quickly gathered herself and turned back to Cynthia. “Cyndi, Benedict was probably just scared of losing you. That’s why he acted out. After all these years together, what could possibly be so bad that you two can’t get past it? Let me host dinner tonight—just the three of us. You two can talk things through. Please, Cyndi, do it for me?”

Cynthia sidestepped Janice’s attempt to take her arm again, forcing a polite, empty smile. “Janice, it’s not that I don’t want to do you a favor. I already have plans tonight. There’s nothing left for me to discuss with him. Why don’t you talk to him instead—convince him to let this go? If he tries to force me again, next time it won’t just end with a bloody forehead.”

Janice stared at her, taken aback. She’d assumed Cynthia and Benedict had just had a heated argument out on the street, not that Benedict had actually tried to force Cynthia and gotten hurt for his trouble. A wave of jealousy and frustration washed over her; she turned her head, pretending to look away so Cynthia wouldn’t catch the tears prickling in her eyes.
