The offer the driver made was almost too good for Cynthia Tremaine to pass up. She hesitated only a moment before agreeing to his terms.

“All right, but you have to remember your promise to vouch for me.”

The driver nodded eagerly, a wide grin spreading across his face.

“Don’t worry, Miss Tremaine. I’ll make sure you and Mr. Holloway board the plane together and walk straight through the Raynes’ front door.”

With such a sincere guarantee, Cynthia finally felt her nerves settle.

With the driver’s help, she managed to ease Dominic Holloway out of the car. To keep him steady, she looped one of his arms over her shoulder and wrapped her other arm around his waist, struggling to support his weight as they made their way to the elevator.

The driver followed a few steps behind, watching until he was satisfied she could manage on her own. He called out reassuringly, “I’ll let you take it from here, Miss Tremaine. If you run into trouble, just give me a call.”

Cynthia nodded, breathless but determined. “Will do.”

As the elevator doors slid shut, she looked back to see the driver beaming at her, his cheerful smile lingering even as the doors closed. A flicker of confusion crossed her mind, but before she could dwell on it, Dominic shifted beside her. Instinctively, she tightened her grip, afraid he might pull her down with him.

She used the moment to shrug her shoulder, which had gone numb under his weight.

When they reached Dominic’s floor, Cynthia coaxed him out of the elevator. Strangely, he seemed lighter now—as if he wasn’t leaning on her quite so heavily anymore.

At his apartment door, she keyed in the code Dominic had given her earlier, more out of hope than expectation. To her surprise, the lock clicked open. For a moment, she just stood there, stunned—he hadn’t given her a temporary code, but a permanent one.

She shot him a bewildered glance, but Dominic just frowned, pain flickering across his features as he leaned against her neck. His dark hair brushed her skin, sending a tingle down her neck that was equal parts ticklish and uncomfortable. She hurried to guide him inside.
