When Cynthia trudged out of the bedroom, her face clouded with frustration, Dominic was already seated at the dining table, waiting for her.
He caught her eye and beckoned her over. “Come on, let’s have breakfast first.”
Cynthia let out a heavy sigh, bracing herself, and took a seat across from him.
Without missing a beat, Dominic reached to the side and produced the latest smartphone model, setting it on the table and sliding it toward her.
“Sorry about last night. I got drunk,” Cynthia muttered, her jaw tight.
Dominic shook his head slightly. “It’s not the phone that matters. It’s the data and everything stored on it.”
He gestured for her to check the device.
Cynthia picked up the phone and inspected it. Sure enough, all her information from the old phone had been transferred over—right down to her wallpaper and contact list. Even her SIM card was already inserted.
She stared at the phone in disbelief. “Did you go out and pick this up first thing this morning?”
Dominic didn’t look up as he cut into his steak. “Do you really think I’d handle something so trivial myself?”
Cynthia fell silent, any flicker of gratitude quickly snuffed out.
She managed a noncommittal “Oh,” then picked up her knife and fork, about to dig into her breakfast. But before she could start, Dominic pushed his plate, the steak already neatly cut, in front of her, and took her untouched plate for himself.
Cynthia’s grip tightened on her utensils. She eyed Dominic warily.
Why was he being so considerate? Was he trying to poison her or something?
Catching her suspicious look, Dominic took a sip of milk and raised an eyebrow. “Not hungry?”
“I’m hungry,” she replied, “just a little…nervous.”
Dominic let out a quiet, mocking laugh. “You didn’t seem nervous last night when we were in the same room together.”
