Cynthia sat in a daze for several minutes before lightly tapping herself on the lips, not having the heart to use any real force.
Was he mad at her?
The thought sent a pang of regret through her. Dominic could break their agreement at any moment, refuse to take her to the Raynes’ engagement party, and leave her behind. Why had she let her mouth run off like that?
By the afternoon, there was still no word from Dominic about a ride to the airport. After wrestling with her nerves for a while, Cynthia finally called Dominic’s driver, Galen.
He’d promised her, after all—sworn that he’d make sure she got on that plane back to the Capital with Dominic.
Galen picked up almost immediately.
“Galen, hey… Remember what you promised me last night? About the flight back to the Capital?”
She didn’t have the nerve to admit she might’ve annoyed Dominic.
Galen’s answer was quick and reassuring. “Of course, Miss Tremaine. Don’t worry, I booked your ticket two days ago at Mr. Holloway’s request. His meeting wraps up in a few minutes. Once he’s finished, I’ll bring him to pick you up.”
“Two days ago?” Cynthia echoed.
So last night, was Galen just trying to dodge the hassle of dealing with a tipsy Dominic, and set her up instead?
There was a brief silence before Galen realized what he’d let slip. He chuckled awkwardly. “Well, I just thought you and Mr. Holloway could use some time to, you know… get to know each other a bit better. I’m sure you’ve noticed, Miss Tremaine, that Mr. Holloway, well—”
Cynthia cut him off before he could finish. “Mr. Holloway has been nothing but generous with me. I’m deeply grateful. Anyway, Galen, I’ve got a few things to take care of, so I’ll let you go.”
She ended the call in a hurry, took a few deep breaths, and, desperate to clear her head, thumped herself on the forehead a couple times with the stack of files on her desk.
Once she’d calmed down, she exhaled sharply, stood up, and headed into the open office area to delegate tasks. She’d be away for at least three days, and there was no way she could let things slide in her absence.
Just as she finished organizing everything, Dominic’s call came through.
