A flicker of surprise crossed Cynthia’s eyes. She pulled her hand back from the ignition, climbed out of the driver’s seat, and walked toward the main entrance of The Tremaines estate.

As she reached the front steps, she spotted a sleek, elegantly designed Aston Martin parked outside.

Seeing her emerge, Dominic stepped out and opened the passenger door for her.

Cynthia took a slow, steadying breath, smoothed a smile onto her face, and slid into the car.

“Thank you.”

Dominic glanced down at her, his reply cool and measured. “You’re welcome.”

Cynthia pressed her lips together, falling silent.

Only after Dominic climbed back behind the wheel and shut his door did she speak, her voice low.

“I need to get my hair and makeup done. It might take a while.”

He nodded, unconcerned. “I know.”

Weren’t men supposed to hate waiting while women got ready or went shopping? Yet Dominic looked almost interested, as if he didn’t mind at all.

Pushing aside her curiosity, Cynthia read off the address her sister had given her.

Dominic only responded with a quiet “Mm,” and pulled away from the curb.

When they arrived at the studio, Cynthia introduced herself at the reception. The receptionist called up to Vernon, who came out to greet her almost immediately.

The moment he saw Cynthia, Vernon greeted her warmly, reaching out to take her hand with a familiarity that made her slightly uncomfortable.

“So you’re Juliet’s sister, Cynthia, right?”

“That’s right.” Cynthia kept her smile in place, resisting the urge to pull her hand away.

Vernon started to lead her inside, hand still clasping hers, but suddenly froze as a chill ran down his spine—a sense of danger he couldn’t quite place.

He glanced over his shoulder and found himself locked in a stare with Dominic, whose expression was cold and eyes sharp with barely veiled displeasure.
