Cynthia slipped her arm through Dominic’s as they stepped into the backyard. Instantly, the laughter and chatter faded; every pair of eyes turned on them, curiosity and surprise rippling quietly through the group.

Viola, who had her back to the entrance, noticed the abrupt change in the air. She turned, and when she saw Cynthia by Dominic’s side, her expression shifted in a way only the closest observer could decipher.

Of all the guests, only Garry and Jocelyn remained completely unfazed.

An awkward silence lingered. People glanced at each other, unsure what to make of the scene.

Jocelyn, however, broke the tension with a bright, excited smile, waving enthusiastically at Cynthia.

Cynthia grinned back, then glanced up at the man beside her. “Let’s go say hi to Garry,” she suggested softly.

Her older sister had given her clear instructions—today, she was to stay close to Dominic.

Dominic gave a slight nod.

Delighted, Cynthia was just about to walk over with him when Viola approached, her steps quick and calculated. She slipped her arm through Cynthia’s in an overly familiar gesture, her smile just a little too perfect.

“Nick, Cynthia, you’re finally here,” she cooed.

Cynthia nodded politely, trying to withdraw her arm, but Viola’s grip only tightened.

“It’s been ages since you’ve been back in the city. I have a few friends I’d love for you to meet.”

Cynthia could tell Viola was trying to latch onto her, but she didn’t want to cause a scene—not at a gathering like this. She forced a gentle smile. “Of course.”

She turned to Dominic, her voice light, “Nick, I’ll catch up with Viola for a bit.”
