Viola was just about to pull out a chair when Miranda shot her a warning look that made her freeze mid-motion, her expression turning a little stiff. She could only wave off Jocelyn’s invitation with a forced smile.

“I’ll pass. You guys go ahead—I need to help my sister greet guests in a bit anyway.”

Jocelyn clicked her tongue in annoyance. “Suit yourself.”

That was when Miranda noticed Cynthia, who'd walked in with Dominic. Miranda waved, her smile all sweetness and charm. “Miss Tremaine, why don’t you join us for a game?”

Viola’s hand tightened a little on the back of the chair.

Jocelyn, seeing Miranda’s expression, immediately sensed trouble. “She doesn’t like cards.”

Cynthia had never been interested in playing cards, which was exactly why Jocelyn hadn’t invited her earlier.

Miranda replied smoothly, “Nathan and his brother are coming soon. Dominic and Garry can play with them. There are still hours until dinner, Miss Tremaine. Won’t you be bored if you don’t join in?”

Viola, already holding a grudge against Cynthia, seized the chance to pile on. “Cynthia, don’t tell me you can’t even afford to play cards anymore?”

“Been away from the city a few years and you’re already down on your luck?”

Cynthia had been about to turn Miranda down, but Viola’s words left her no room.

Jocelyn’s face darkened. “What’s that supposed to mean, Viola?”

Viola’s smile was all venom and no warmth. “Nothing at all. I just meant, if Cynthia’s a little short on cash, I could always lend her some.”
