As Miranda’s irritation grew, Guthrie, seated across from Nathan, finally answered her.

“Four more rounds. Why don’t you relax on the sofa for a bit?”

Miranda gave a curt nod and moved to sit on a nearby couch.

Susan struck up some small talk with Nathan, then joined Miranda, making a visible effort to engage her in conversation.

Susan’s company was still working on a project with the Kingsleys; despite her growing dissatisfaction with Miranda, she didn’t want to let things get too awkward.
