She gradually unclenched her fingers from the glass, forcing herself to calm down.

But just as she managed to steady her nerves, the man beside her snatched the glass right out of her hands.

“This water’s filthy. How could you even think about drinking it?”

Dominic’s voice was low and even, as he casually tipped the water out behind him.

A chorus of startled gasps rose from behind.

A well-dressed woman, who had been deep in conversation with her friends, shot to her feet, indignation written all over her face. “What on earth do you think—”

She stopped mid-sentence when she realized it was Dominic standing there, glass in hand. Immediately, her anger seemed to evaporate.

“Oh, I didn’t realize it was you, Mr. Holloway.”

Dominic’s expression was unreadable as he glanced at her, his gaze cool and indifferent. “My apologies.”

He said the words, but there wasn’t a trace of apology in his demeanor.

The woman’s face stiffened. After all, she and her friends had been seated before Dominic and his party arrived, and the tables weren’t even that far apart. They had been chatting the whole time—how could they possibly have missed them?

She hadn’t done anything to offend Dominic, so she tried not to dwell on it. But catching the hint of contempt in his eyes, she couldn’t shake the feeling that his actions were deliberate—a pointed insult, as if he was mocking them.

Yet she had no proof, so she could only force a calm smile and return to her seat. As she sat, she caught Cynthia’s eye and, in a flash, realized what had just happened: Dominic’s actions were all for Cynthia’s sake.

Cynthia glanced sideways, stunned, her eyes shining with a mix of surprise and gratitude.

He must have sensed her discomfort and taken the glass from her on purpose, dumping the water in a way that splashed the women behind them.

The sort of thing she hesitated to do, Dominic did without a second thought.

Those women were wary of him, too cautious to make a scene. Even if they suspected he’d done it on purpose, they wouldn’t dare say so.

It was as if Dominic was proving, through his actions, every word he’d just spoken.
