Dan arched an eyebrow at Carroll, giving him a sidelong glance. “You looking for me?”

Carroll nodded. “Yeah.”

There was no mistaking it—why else would Carroll be tracking him down?

Dan’s gaze dropped, his whole demeanor turning colder as memories of that mess back in Ferrowland’s capital with Yvonne flooded back.

He let out a heavy sigh. “Isn’t she supposed to be with her mother’s daughter?”

Carroll shrugged. “Not sure what she wants with you.”

“Where is she now?”

“At the airport.”

“Let her know where I am.”

Carroll hesitated. “But she—”

He trailed off, clearly uneasy. Right now, Yvonne was acting like a woman possessed where Dan was concerned—every time they met, it was all claws and fury. Frankly, she was the last person Dan needed to see.

But Dan’s icy glare silenced any further protest. Carroll swallowed whatever he was about to say and headed off to pass along Dan’s whereabouts.

Left alone, Dan’s eyes darkened, emotions swirling beneath the surface.

“So she’s coming herself this time… Good.”

He didn’t really care why she was coming. All he knew was that if Yvonne didn’t seek him out now, he might not get another chance to see her for a long, long time.

Thinking about how Yvonne always flew off the handle whenever she saw him now, Dan stood and walked over to a cabinet. He opened it and pulled out a box—inside, a collection of expensive cigars.

He took one out, clipped the end, and set it smoldering in a heavy glass ashtray shaped like a peacock.

Then he sat back at his desk, fished out a bottle of pills from the drawer, and popped one.

She barreled over there, all fire and fury, with Chloe by her side. Chloe, ever the careful one, scanned the castle’s perimeter with binoculars.

“No one around?” she asked, surprised.
