Stella’s Side

Stella just couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling in her chest. Every day she went without finding out who sent that anonymous pregnancy test, her nerves twisted a little tighter.

Honestly, who wouldn’t want answers after something like that? Anyone would want to get to the bottom of it just to have some peace of mind—especially when your husband is as handsome and sought-after as Ronald.

These days, Ronald barely left her side. “Take it easy, babe. Try not to toss around so much,” he murmured.

But she just couldn’t sleep. She kept rolling over in bed, restless. Ronald gently pulled her into his arms, pressing her head against his chest, but Stella kept squirming, nuzzling closer without even realizing it.

That little bit of squirming was all it took; Ronald’s patience was nearly shot.

“I’m still mad, you know,” she mumbled into his chest, her voice muffled but clear enough.

That single sentence was like a bucket of cold water thrown over him.

“Star…” he sighed.

“I’m not mad because I don’t trust you—I’m just mad,” she said, her words tumbling out as she tried to explain.

He softened, his grip loosening as he brushed her hair out of her face and kissed her deeply.

When he finally let her go, Stella was breathless, staring up at him with wide, almost teary eyes.

“Still haven’t figured it out, have you?” Ronald teased, though his voice was gentle.

She stared at him, looking so pitiful he almost laughed.

“Mom’s already sent someone to track down Melissa,” Ronald explained. “She’ll come by tomorrow and explain everything, okay?”

Melissa. Stella’s stomach twisted again. Last time Melissa was at their dinner party, she’d gone out of her way to make Stella uncomfortable.

“And Regina Schultz’s side? Someone’s gone there too,” Ronald added.

Regina! Those two weren’t the only ones making eyes at Ronald, but they were definitely the boldest.

As soon as he ducked into the bathroom, Stella’s phone started to buzz. It was Susanna.

Stella froze for a second, staring at the name. Everyone had been desperately searching for Susanna lately—especially Yvonne, who’d practically turned Black Gate upside down looking for her.

Seeing Susanna’s number on her screen, Stella snatched up the phone.

“Susie?”

“It’s me,” came the reply.

Stella tightened her grip on the phone. “Did my sister find you? Are you okay? Did the Murray family give you any trouble?”

Thanks to Yvonne, Stella had no love lost for the Murray family. She didn’t hold back. “Those people are absolute jerks. You’re family—how could they treat you like that?”

Sure, the Larkins were a nightmare too, but right now, Stella was far more upset with the Murrays and how they’d treated Susanna.

At least with the Larkins, she had the Quinns behind her—and Ronald. But Susanna was all alone.
