ATHENA

“Are you sure about this?” Alex asks me as we step into the apartment.

“Yes. I need this.” I whisper.

My heart is boiling, and anger is threatening to spill over since this morning.

After the surprise party last night, we went clubbing and it was so fun although I didn't take any alcohol. I don't know why, but I've just been avoiding it lately.

It was this morning when I was getting ready to drop Rayen off when Alex dropped the bomb.

My aunty had my parents killed. As in, my mother's sister. Does that even make sense? How can someone be so wicked?

He'll, I knew she was heartless when she took all my inheritance and blocked me from her life. She tried to return after I got married to Alex, but I refused to see her. But this, this is something I can't wrap my head around.

Mum was so good to her. So I need answers!

Alex opens the door, and I halt my steps.

The first scent that hits my nose is a stench of blood mixed with sweat and something unpleasant. I take a step forward into the living room, which is chaotic.

The living room has messed up chairs. Pillows have been cut, and feathers are all over. Glass is shattered, and in the middle of it, is Aunt Glenda.

She is tied to a chair with her mouth taped and her face bruised so bad one eye is closing. Her neck is hanging low from what seems like having passed put and I can't bring myself to feel sorry for her.

I walk past her and head straight to the kitchen, open the fridge, and grab a bottle of water that's ice cold.

My fingers wrap around it tightly, my knuckles whitening, and then I spot the bucket in the corner.

Perfect.

I unscrew the cap, pour the water in, and then grab another. And another. And another.

“Athena, what-” Noah tries to speak but is cut off.

“Noah,” Alex warns.

“Let her do what she wants.”

Even his voice has an edge I haven’t heard in a while. Like he knows this moment is mine to claim. I need it.

“Athena, my dear baby girl. Thank God you're here! I was taken-”

“Oh please save your bullshit for someone who will buy it. I know everything!”

Her lips tremble. Her skin is pale beneath the bruises. But I see the tiny crack in the mask she’s trying to wear.

She knows I’m not here to be manipulated.

I crouch in front of her, gripping the knife loosely in one hand, not even trying to hide how steady my hands are. Because I'm a damn good doctor, and I can cut anyone open with my eyes closed and still keep them alive

She must know this because she doesn't even dare to look at me.

“You killed them,” I say softly, almost like I’m reciting a bedtime story. “My mother was nothing but kind to you, and you still had her murdered.”

Her chin quivers. “You don’t understand-”

I laugh dryly.

“I don't understand? Well then, make me.” I cut in, the blade tapping gently against the wooden arm of the chair. “Explain how money or jealousy or greed or whatever the hell you were feeling justifies wiping out an entire family and leaving me an orphan. Explain it to me, Aunt Glenda. I’ll wait.”
