Before Aurora could say much to Lucas, the office door was knocked on again.

Her brows furrowed slightly. “Come in.”

Ian pushed the door open, looking a bit embarrassed. “Um, sorry to interrupt, Miss Aurora. Madam Grace just found out you’re back and asked to see you.”

At those words, Aurora’s heart sank.

She had known all along that not going to see her mother the moment she returned wasn’t the right thing to do.

But with Tessa in the picture and everything she had done–Aurora truly didn’t know how to face her mother.

In fact, she could probably guess what her mother wanted to say.

Lucas saw her go quiet and understood her hesitation immediately

He reached up and gently ruffled her hair..

“It’s alright. Don’t worry,” he said with a soft smile.

“Every hurdle can be crossed. And besides, she’s your mother. Whatever it is, just talk it out.”

Aurora looked up and met his eyes–warm, tender, filled with love

That look was enough to drown her in affection.

If she wasn’t careful, she’d fall right into the net of tenderness he so easily wove around her.

Her gaze shifted quickly as a light blush climbed up her ears.

“Alright, I need to go see my mother now. No time to linger here,”

She stood up quickly and headed for Grace’s office.

Lucas followed her out.

Aurora turned, puzzled. “Why are you coming? She only asked for me.

“You don’t need to worry about me. I’m just going to see my own mother. I don’t need you tagging along.”

Lucas rubbed his nose and lifted a finger, pointing in the opposite direction from where she was headed.

“Um, Aurora, actually I was thinking of heading back to work first…”

The moment she heard that, Aurora’s face turned bright red.

She quickly spun around and strode off toward Grace’s office, even breaking into a half–run

Lucas started off amused, but soon his tone turned worried.

“Hey, slow down! There’s no need to rush. Watch your step, make sure you’re looking where you’re going.”

Aurora didn’t even turn her head. She waved her hand behind her to signal she heard him.

Right now, all she wanted was to escape that moment.

God, just thinking about what she’d said earlier made her want to dig a hole and disappear.

How could anyone say something that awkward out loud?

The worst part was, she hadn’t even realized how strange her words sounded.
