“What kind of chief are you? Are you trying to get yourself fired and sent back home to dig potatoes? I usually don’t care what you do with your own family, but if you mess this up today, you can kiss your job—and your future—goodbye. You’ve got the nerve to go after the Woods family AND the Stonnell family? What’s next, you want to take on the President himself?”

The chief was totally lost, no idea what any of this meant.

“Sir, with all due respect, what’s going on? The Woods family, the Stonnell family? We’re just a small-town precinct, there’s no way we’d be involved with people like that.”

Even as he spoke, he glanced over at Jackson and Fiona. The moment he really looked at their faces, he nearly fell over in shock.
