“No buts.”

“If the deal falls through, they’ll blame me again.”

“Blame you for what? For staying out all night drinking? For letting booze mess up the project? Or for not being good enough to run the company?”

Jane just stood there, speechless. She pressed her lips together, gave a tiny nod, then took a deep breath and straightened her clothes before following Fiona inside.

As soon as they pushed open the door to the private room, a wave of alcohol and cigarette smoke hit them. Fiona stepped in, her face set in a fierce scowl, looking like she could snap at any second.

Everyone inside knew Fiona. Just moments ago, they’d been chatting away, and of course, the conversation had been about Jane—pretty, smart, fresh out of college, and heiress to a wealthy family. To them, she was prime gossip material.

But the second Fiona and Jane walked in together, every voice died. All eyes turned to Fiona.

One of the men—a heavyset guy with greasy cheeks—jumped to his feet. “Ms. Fiona! What a surprise. Are you here for dinner too?”

Fiona didn’t even look at him. Jane had told her everything—the way this guy kept pushing drinks on her, dragging out the negotiations, and egging the others on not to sign the deal so easily.

She had no reason to bother with courtesy.
