“What do I know? I’m afraid I don’t understand what you mean, Uncle,” Chad said, his dark eyes narrowing.

“Hah, you’ve learned Frederic’s talent for putting on a show, haven’t you? A true firstborn of the Abernathy family!” Mason took a long drag from his cigar and, knowing of Chad’s poor health, deliberately blew a thick cloud of smoke in his direction—a blatant provocation. “Back then, you paid Morgan to kidnap you and that bastard. You were pulling the strings from behind the whole time, planning the entire thing. You guaranteed them a ransom of over a hundred million and even promised them an extra fifty million on the side. Fifty million, twenty years ago—that was a hell of a lot of money.”

Chad listened without a flicker of emotion, his eyes dark and lifeless, as if he were a detached observer.

“Your original plan was to stage a kidnapping of the Abernathy twins with Morgan’s help, then use the opportunity to kill Thaddeus. Back then, Frederic was only the acting chairman; the old man still held the real power in the Abernathy Group. And ever since Thaddeus arrived, your status in the family had plummeted.
