I didn’t know why I deserved this.

Why, out of the millions of werewolves on this earth, I had to end up sharing a mate.

Lia Snow was unexpected, someone I hadn’t ever considered or seen in that light before. Why would I? It was never about who she was or how she dressed or what she looked like. There was one simple reason: She was human. I didn’t think I would end up mated to one of them, let alone to someone I knew so closely. Someone my friends bullied for so long.

She was my birthday twin. I didn’t know why I ignored such an important detail. If that didn’t scream ‘soulmates‘, I didn’t know what would. But how could I have guessed? She was just a classmate—a human girl at school. Sure, she was always beautiful, and contrary to what everyone believed, I had always known that. The first time I’d noticed the shade of her eyes was back when we were six. When she was crying after Warner spoilt her dress. The white of her eyes had turned slightly pink from crying, and I’d observed how the brown stood out.

When we grew older, it rained one day when we were leaving school. Her white shirt had clung to her body, showing off the curves she kept hidden under her loose clothes. I’d seen her, noticed the way she shivered from the cold. I’d thought of giving

her my jacket, but it was uncharacteristic of me to do that. I was a werewolf posing as a human, and there was a certain image I had to maintain. One of a bad boy, a cold hearted introvert. Why would that guy offer a girl his jacket?

I first noticed how forgeous her hair was when Ajax was threatening to set fire to it. I’d stopped him, without her realising that I’d intervened. And she didn’t need to know. Her hair was dark, thick and long, the kind that reminded

you of princesses. She kept it in a bun, a braid or a ponytail, never letting it loose. But I’d noticed anyway, even if I never said it out loud.

I hadn’t come up with a picture album all of a sudden. I didn’t sit and search for her pictures in every year book or event album. Every time I’d go through those, my mind took a silent note of her. I never said it, never marked the page or pointed her out to anyone else. But I would always know where she was, what she looked like, and what she was doing in the photograph. So when she said she was invisible to me, it took me very little time to find all those photos of her. It took long to compile them all together, but finding the images was no big deal.

And yet, I couldn’t tell her all of this because it wouldn’t matter. Because maybe I remembered it all wrong. Maybe the excuses I was giving myself were false. Maybe I’d been taking pleasure in her bullying, just like everyone else. Maybe I too enjoyed it when she yelled and cried and squirmed. Maybe I was a jerk to her too, but now that I knew she was my mate, my mind was trying to convince me that I really deserved her.

There were a thousand moments in the last ten years where Lia had needed me. There were moments she’d shivered at the sight of me, and I did nothing to reassure her. I did nothing to calm her down. There were instances she’d glanced at me for help, but I had looked away. The truth was always black and white. I had never protected her even when I could, not until I found out who she really was.

And why would she trust me then?

I growled and punched the tree, causing the trunk to break in half. We were in a park behind our school, since Lia had told me to get lost and not to approach her.

“Zane,” Sheila scolded me, scowling. “You’re leaving around signs.”

“So what?” I snapped, glaring at her.

“Relax, man,” Aaron said at once, stepping between us, blocking my view of her.

Now that was a good mate. He protected Sheila no matter what. In every single situation. Not like me, who ignored Lia for ten

years.

“I am relaxed,” I stated.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, frowning. “You look very tense.”

“You’ve known that for a while, bro,” Ajax pointed out. “You were pretty chill until now.”

“I was never chill, Ajax.”

“Okay, but you weren’t this worried. She’s gonna choose you.”

“How do you know that?” I asked. “After everything we’ve done to her, what if she doesn’t? And that piece of shit, he thinks he can have her attacked. He’s playing dirty to get her in good books.”

“But he didn’t, Zane,” Aaron reassured. “You did. You won that

battle.”

“What if he continues to play dirty and it works? My mate just told me she wants nothing to do with me. You know what she just said? She asked me to find out how to get rid of the mate bond.”

Now, they all looked shocked. “What?” Sheila said in disbelief. “She wants to get rid of it? How can she?”

“She’s human,” I defended. “And stuck with two wereolves, not even one. She’s terrified, guys. I didn’t want to reveal all of this to her, but that guy keeps creating these impossible situations.”

My blood started to boil once more.

“Alright, Zane. Calm down. Your eyes are black.”

I closed them shut, gritting my teeth.

“If he’s playing dirty, so should you,” Warner stated. “What will you do if he kidnaps her or something?”

“I will rip his head off,” I seethed, glancing at him.

“Why don’t you beat him to it?” Warner shrugged. “That’s what I’d do.”

“You’d kidnap your mate?”
