I turned my face to the side, closing my eyes.

Then what was going on?

“Listen to me,” Zane took my chin, forcing me to face him. “Whatever it is, we will figure it out, alright? Just don’t be worried. One step at a time.”

“Why is this happening to me?”

“I don’t know. But I’ll find out. And I will make sure that what happened tonight doesn’t happen again.”

Zane pursed his lips. “There is a way, but I’m not sure you’ll agree to it. In fact, I think you’ll take offense.”

I scoffed. “Bring it on.”

“Zane, no,” Sheila muttered, looking at him like he was crazy.

“What else am I supposed to do?” he asked.

He released a breath. “I could get a tracker installed into your neck.”

“Hear me out. I thought of all other ways to track your location if something like this happens again. The people I had posted outside your house said they only saw a white light escape your window. It was gone in seconds. I think… I think that might be you. They saw no one enter your house, and no one leave. And you

you said you woke up naked. Your clothes must’ve torn or evaporated. Your pendant is gone.” He touched my neck. “So no gadget or piece of jewellery will help. But if there is a chip inside you, that might actually work.”

“Except, she could be,” Zane snapped, making me flinch. Zane looked at me apologetically. “I am one too. We all are. We’re part animals, Lia. When wolves go rogue, they become rabid, sometimes we have to install a tracker into their bodies for their safety and for others‘. I don’t care what you do to anyone else in this town. If you’re transitioing, somehow, I don’t care if you rip open the necks of every human or animal in your path. But I cannot afford you getting hurt. Like today. If I hadn’t heard you in time, or I’d been a second later, that boar would’ve killed you. I cannot risk that again. Please, Lia. Let me do this.”

I took a deep breath, closing my eyes. “Okay.”

“Okay?” He sounded surprise.

“Yeah. Screw it. I trust you.”

Zane pressed a kiss to my forehead. “Thank you. I promise you, I will not abuse that trust.”

I smiled at him, looking into his eyes. “I know.”

He pushed my hair away and leaned his forehead against mine, closing his eyes. “I am so glad you’re safe,” he whispered.

“It’s all thanks to you. At this point, I’ve lost count of the amount of times you’ve saved my

life.”

We reached home after a while, and Zane sneaked us into my bedroom, directly through the window. He placed me down, and I blinked a couple of times, the room spinning.

“You good?” he whispered, maintaining his arms around my

waist.

“Yeah,” I said as I regained my balance and composure. “Thanks.”

“Let’s go clean you up.”

“No,” I said, placing my hand on his chest. “I can clean up. You

wait here.”

He smiled. “Missed opportunity.”
