–LIA’S POV–

Dinner preparation at our house wasn’t usually chaotic, but today felt different.

There was this buzz in the air, like everyone was nervously excited. I was still kinda raw from everything, but I also couldn’t help feeling a little fluttery inside. Zane was coming over. For dinner. Like, officially. With my parents.

I never thought they would be welcoming him into our home so soon. After all, Mom and Dad had spent ten years comforting and consoling me when I’d come home crying after being bullied by The Hounds.

Now I was dating one of them. Their leader, particularly. The boy who I’d spilt juice on and invited the wrath of his friends towards myself.

But Mom and Dad were the most supportive parents in the

world.

Now that I knew I wasn’t related to them, it made sense why they were always so perfect in

Tom way.

They wanted to be the best parents for me, and not being the ones to bring me into this world was not going to stop them.

Mom was in the kitchen, chopping vegetables like the cutting. board had personally offended her. She kept muttering under her breath about “presentation” and “not burning anything today.”

I peeked into the fridge and then looked at her. “Do we really need four different kinds of sauces? He’s just my boyfriend, Mom, you didn’t need to go all masterchef.”

“Yes,” she said, not even looking up. “Boys eat a lot. Especially tall, lean, broody ones.”

“That’s true. But still, you didn’t have to do so much.”

“I know,” she smiled, “but I want to. He saved you, Lia, this is the least we can do.”

“He did make her life miserable for ten years,” Dad called out.

“That’s in the past, Dad,” I called back.

He walked in, holding a fancy tablecloth he’d pulled out from some forgotten corner of the house. “Do we even use this one? What’s the point? It’s just Zane.”

“Exactly what I was saying just now.

“The two of you are the most ungrateful souls.” Mom narrowed her eyes at the table. “We’re thanking him. Properly. He deserves a good dinner. Not takeout and paper napkins.”

“I like takeout,” I muttered.

I rolled my eyes. “One time. I did that one time.”

Dad walked past me, gave my hair a quick ruffle, and headed to the dining room. “Alright, napkins folded. Candles or no candles?”

“No candles,” I said quickly. “We’re not seducing him.”

“Maybe you should. I mean, I wouldn’t blame you,” Mom said. under her breath.

“Mom!”

She smirked, tossing chopped peppers into a sizzling pan.

“Alright,” Dad called from the other room, “I’m laying out the good plates. No one drop anything!”

Mom raised her brows at me. “He’s more nervous than you are.”

I gave a little smile, chewing my lip. “It’s just… weird. You know? Having him over like this. After everything.”

Mom’s face softened. She set the spatula down and walked over,

tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. “I know it’s been a lot. But tonight’s just dinner. That’s it. We’ll talk, we’ll eat, and you can stare at your boyfriend all you want.”

“He’s not officially–” I started.

She tilted her head.

“Fine. He is. Kind of. Whatever.” My cheeks flamed.

I wasn’t used to talking boys with Mom. There had been none in my life before Zane and Blake showed up.

“Thought so.”

I went upstairs to change, picking out a

casual–but–not–too–casual outfit. I settled on my favourite blue sweatshirt—the one Zane once said made me look “annoyingly cute.” I glanced at the clock. Ten more minutes.

Pacing wasn’t helping. I plopped down on the bed and stared at the ceiling until the doorbell finally rang.

“Oh my God,” I whispered to myself. Then louder, “He’s here!”

“We heard!” Mom shouted back.

I held back a giggle as I rushed down the stairs, but slowed when I reached the bottom. I didn’t wanna seem too eager, even though I totally was. It was stupid, because I’d met him just a
