"I work for the Milton Group!" I answered, "Oscar, I heard that politicians like yourself are not able to participate. So, you're here now because..?"
He was slightly stunned and said with a smile, "Yes, of course, we can't participate. It's my wife who's doing so. It's not great to have her stay home idly, so I arranged for a corporate position for her to keep her busy. Hence, I could get some peace and quiet at home! I am here to accompany her today."
From his explanation, it seemed like he was a caring husband!
I smiled. Seeing that it was getting late, I stood up and said, "Oscar, the auction is about to begin. I have to go and prepare first, so I'll take my leave."
He stood up with a smile, but he blocked my way. "Miss Reid, there is still some time. It's rare to see you, so why don't we talk? It won't take a lot of time, just a few minutes."
I was stunned. Even if I was stupid, I could understand what he meant. He'd waited for this opportunity!
"Oscar, you are too kind. But I am just a low-ranked employee. What could you need to speak
to me about?"
He sat back on his chair and looked at me with a smile, indicating for me to sit down and talk.
I sat down and stared at him as I maintained my polite demeanor.
"How much commission will you receive for this project?" He asked, straight to the point.
As he spoke, he pushed a bank card towards me, a smile in his eyes, "There is twenty thousand dollars worth of credit on this card. Of course, a woman like you certainly won't be satisfied with just this. This is why I intend to top up. As long as you have a few good words about me to Mr. Roberts, I'll give you an extra fifty thousand. Of course, you can name me a figure as well. I can give you as much as you want."
I was a little surprised. My eyes fell on the bank card on the table. I narrowed my eyes slightly, stood on the table, and raised my chin. "You mean that I should just give up on the bid and focus on selling you to Mr. Roberts? Did I get that right?"
"Yes, you are indeed smart. Such a bright, sharp, and likable person. Indeed, Mr. Roberts has good taste!" The smile on his face became more confident.
There was a bit of lewdness in his smile. He pushed the bank card towards me again, signaling for me to put it away.
I did not take it immediately. Instead, I contemplated the bank card and said lightly, "Twenty thousand dollars, that's quite a lot. If you add the remaining fifty, I could even afford the down payment for a house in Asherton already."
