Lucy cried for a long time, her tears eventually giving way to anger. “I get it now! It’s all because of Charlotte! She’s pregnant, and Mom’s only protecting her! Fine, all of you—you’ve all abandoned me! None of you are coming to save me!”

She ended the call in frustration, knowing full well that James had refused to help her since the last incident. Begging him was pointless; she’d have to come up with a plan on her own.

Hours passed, and as evening fell, she was summoned by the police to the visitation room. To her surprise, the person waiting for her was none other than Charlotte.

“Charlotte?” Lucy called out, startled at first, but her expression quickly darkened. “Why are you here? Did you come just to gloat?”

“Lucy, don’t make it sound so harsh. I came to check on you because I care.” Charlotte’s smile was faint, almost mocking.

If not for the officers present, Lucy would have lunged at her to tear apart that fake, self-righteous mask.

Scoffing, Lucy sneered, “Charlotte, it’s just the two of us here—drop the act. You borrowed my car, but when James questioned you, you denied everything. I trusted you, never thought I’d have to guard against you. That’s on me.”

The softness in Charlotte’s eyes vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating gaze. She leaned closer and whispered, “Lucy, I only stated the truth. You’re the one who wanted to harm Sarah in the first place.”

“I don’t want to argue with you,” Lucy shot back. “Where’s my mom? Why are you the one here instead of her?”

“What do you mean?” Lucy’s heart raced.

“Exactly what I said. You know how much Mom values this baby, don’t you? Do you honestly think she’d jeopardize her grandchild for your sake?” Charlotte said, her lips curling into a faint, confident smile.

Lucy’s face turned pale, then flushed with anger. She gritted her teeth. “Don’t celebrate too soon, Charlotte. Vivian will save me! I know she will!”

Charlotte let out a light laugh, shaking her head. “You’re so naive, Lucy. You were just a pawn to her. Do you really think she’d stick her neck out for you after the mess you’ve made? Especially when you’ve crossed someone like Zachary? Don’t forget, he’s the one who had you thrown in here.”
