James walked back home, looking completely defeated, only to find his mother in the middle of a phone call.

Ever since he discovered that his mother had some kind of secret connection with Mrs. Sanders, he had been extra cautious about any of her phone conversations. And today, sure enough, he happened to overhear her mentioning Sarah.

“This time, Sarah won’t be able to get away for sure. We’re allies, I wouldn’t lie to you.”

“Don’t worry, just leave this matter to me. Mrs. Sanders, once your son gets control of Sanders Group, don’t forget…”

Mrs. Chancer casually glanced toward the doorway — only to spot her son standing there. She immediately cut herself off, “I’ll talk to you later. James just got home.”

After hanging up, James walked in, pretending like he hadn’t heard anything. “Mom, who were you just talking to on the phone?”

Mrs. Chancer brushed him off lightly,

“Don’t overthink it. Just a friend of mine… my card-playing buddy.”

James obviously didn’t believe that excuse. His voice was calm but firm.

“Mom, Sarah and I have nothing to do with each other anymore. Please don’t hurt her again.”

Mrs. Chancer’s face instantly darkened. Pointing at him, she snapped, “Everything I’ve done — all of it — has been for you. And now you’re telling me not to touch that woman? James, have you forgotten your wife is still locked up because of her? Even your son is suffering. And you stand here telling me not to hurt Sarah? You think saying one sentence like that is enough to erase everything that’s happened? Keep dreaming!”

Mrs. Chancer had never yelled at her son like this before. But she couldn’t forget the other day when she walked into his study and caught him quietly staring at a photo of Sarah — his eyes full of longing.

“James, wake up. No matter what happens, you and her are impossible now.”

James let out a long sigh.

“I know, Mom.”

Melvin quickly took a sip. His eyes widened slightly. “Wow… this is really good.”

Under Sarah’s watchful gaze, Melvin finished every last drop of the soup in his bowl. Then, wiping his mouth with a napkin, he gave her a thoughtful look. “Sasa, is there something you want to tell me?”

Sarah froze for a second, then smiled.

“Nothing gets past you, huh? It’s not a big deal. I just suddenly remembered that tomorrow is Uncle’s birthday. I just got back from West Ridge today, so I haven’t had time to prepare a gift. Did you get him anything yet?”

Melvin tapped his fingers lightly against the table, the sound crisp and clear. His tone was a little heavy as he replied, “I wasn’t planning on going home for dad’s birthday.”

Sarah blinked in surprise.

“Why not? No matter what, Uncle’s always hoped we’d come home. It’s his birthday this time — I’m sure he’d really love for us to be there together.”

She spoke gently and sweetly, trying to persuade him.
