Later that night, Sarah went downstairs with her empty glass to get some water. But just as she passed by the living room, she overheard a conversation between Melvin and Mrs. Sanders.

“You’re really impossible to talk to, you know that?” Mrs. Sanders sounded both angry and disappointed. “It’s not just me — everyone in the family has been trying to convince you. Sarah studied psychology, not business. She has no experience at all. The entire Sanders Group is depending on you.”

Melvin’s voice, on the other hand, was clearly filled with impatience.

“I’m pretty sure I told you a long time ago, stop bringing up anything about Sarah.”

Mrs. Sanders snorted coldly.

“How can I not bring it up? It’s just that you’re willing to work like a fool without asking for anything in return. If you’re just going to be a tool to manage Sanders Group for someone else, I really don’t understand why you’re doing all this.”

She paused, then added,

“By the way, your aunt hinted to me earlier — she wants Sarah to hurry up and get Sydney out of jail. It’s nothing serious anyway, and if it saves us a little trouble, why not?”

Melvin’s expression grew even colder.

“Mom, I was the one who called the police and had Sydney arrested. Sarah didn’t know anything about it. If anyone wants revenge, they should come to me.”

His voice grew firmer.

“As for Sanders Group, there’s nothing more to discuss. I already promised Uncle I’d take care of it, and I’m not going back on my word. Even though Sarah is technically just my cousin, we grew up together. To me, she’s my little sister. I would never, ever hurt her. And if you keep bringing this up, I won’t come back home anymore.”

Melvin’s tone was so firm that even Mrs. Sanders didn’t expect it.

She stared at him, disappointed and angry.

“Melvin, you’ve really let me down. I raised you, trained you, and supported you — not so you could end up being someone else’s housekeeper. You’ve gone against me so many times because of her. Are you really willing to cut ties with me over Sarah?”

Melvin looked at his mother in shock.

“Mom… I never wanted that. But you’re the one forcing me.”

“Me?” Mrs. Sanders burst into bitter laughter, her anger spilling over.

Melvin’s face turned dark.

Under the dim lights of the living room, the two of them sat facing each other on the couch. The air was still heavy with the sweet scent of birthday cake.

Mrs. Sanders sat there, slowly sizing up the niece that everyone praised to the skies.

“You heard everything I just said to Melvin, didn’t you? Got anything you want to say?”

Sarah shook her head calmly.

“I have nothing to say.”

Whatever she might’ve wanted to ask, Melvin had already asked. And Mrs. Sanders’ silence earlier… was already the best answer.

Mrs. Sanders laughed coldly.

“Sarah, this is a huge company we’re talking about, and you don’t even bother to ask anything? Let me tell you — I know everything that happened at the West Ridge factory. You removed Sullivan on purpose. And Lambert? He’s no good either.”
