After a long, heavy silence, Jules finally tried to make peace. “Ethan, don’t worry. If anything happens at home, I’ll take responsibility. You have my word.”

Morris’s lips quirked into a sly, mocking smile.

Jules had only brought him back because they were father and son—nothing more. Deep down, he couldn’t bring himself to trust Morris completely. So when Jackson started slinging mud at Morris, Jules just couldn’t step up and defend him outright.

At the end of the day, he was just trying to keep the peace.

Morris spoke up, voice smooth and cool. “In that case, you’d better keep a close eye on your precious little wallet. Mistresses are expensive these days. Don’t blow all your money and try to pin it on me.”

Jackson’s face turned stormy. “Are you calling me out?”

Morris just shrugged. “Just telling it like it is.”

Jackson’s jaw clenched in anger. He did have a little something on the side—a sweet, quiet girl. He’d set her up in a pretty villa, slipped her plenty of spending money each month, and even let her have his child.

But she was discreet, never asking for more, never making trouble, living quietly in that villa and hardly ever reaching out. He was sure Morris couldn’t possibly know about her. This was just a bluff.

Instead of backing down, Jackson doubled down. “You’ve got some nerve. Framing me is a crime, you know. Morris, I should call the cops on you.”

Morris looked at him with bored contempt.

Then, out of nowhere, Morris said the girl’s nickname: “Makinley.”

Jackson went dead silent, like someone had flipped his off switch.

Morris shook his head and sighed. “I’m only staying at the Sharp family estate for a short while. I’m not here to threaten anyone’s interests. If you leave me alone, we’ll all get along just fine. But if you try to mess with me, you’ll only end up hurting yourselves.”

“Sorry for the trouble,” he said.

Jules was caught off guard, his feelings all tangled up—a mix of admiration for Morris’s cool head, a sting of sympathy for the way he’d been mistreated, and an even deeper worry about how he’d ever get through to this wild child.

He could tell: Morris hadn’t come home out of love.

“So why did you come back?” Jules finally asked, the question heavy on his heart. “It doesn’t really feel like you’re here to be part of the Sharp family.”

Morris shot right back, “Maybe you should ask your Sharp family first—which one of them actually wants me here?”

Jules had no answer for that—just silence.

Finally, he forced himself to change the subject. “You just got to Vincent Estate. You probably don’t know everyone yet. I’ll throw you a welcome party—introduce you to all the Sharp family’s friends and relatives.”
