Two years ago, Lauren scored top marks to become the youngest person ever admitted to the Global Harmony Medical Institute. The legend of the prodigy girl was set in stone—Anastasia couldn’t even hold a candle to her.
“Bet she’s in for a rude awakening. If Anastasia gets in, I’ll wash my hair standing on my head!”
The news spread like wildfire across Fairhaven. Some of Anastasia’s recent actions since returning had slightly softened people’s opinions of her, but the moment she applied to the Institute, they went right back to treating her as a laughingstock—an even bigger one than before.
When the rumor reached Lauren, Penny was right by her side, worry etched across her face as she muttered fiercely, “That girl’s getting bold! Remember how she suddenly showed up at the Brennans’ mansion, claiming she wanted to visit the old man? I knew then she wasn’t about to give up. She just wants to steal your spot as the heir! Like she’d ever be that filial otherwise.”
“Honestly, I called it, didn’t I? Lauren, what should we do? Should we come up with a plan? What if she actually gets in—”
Lauren cut her off with a scoffing laugh, not even bothering to look up from the rare medical tome she was idly flipping through—a book only the Brennan family, with their deep medical roots, could have in their collection. Her expression was cool, detached, and full of contempt. Anastasia wasn’t even on her radar.
“You think the Global Harmony Medical Institute takes just anyone? The year I got in, I scored seventy out of a hundred. That was the highest. And trust me, the test was anything but easy.”
“There were dozens of brilliant candidates that year, but none of them even broke sixty. I was the only one who made the cut.”
She let out a cold, mocking laugh. “Anastasia? She’ll be lucky if she manages to spell her own name.”
Penny, who’d never been to college and didn’t really grasp what the Institute represented, finally understood the gravity of it after Lauren’s explanation. Relief washed over her, and she clapped her hands with a laugh. “Well, isn’t that just perfect? She’s setting herself up for humiliation!”
“So we just sit back and watch her crash and burn.”
“That little upstart—still after your inheritance after all these years? She really should take a long look in the mirror.”
