"What do you think you’re doing?" a calm voice said.
I turned, and there stood Ferris. I noticed his clenched fists and the fury in his eyes yet he was calm. His presence seemed to command the very air around him. There was a cruel smile playing on his lips.
The sight of him, so calm yet so dangerous, stunned everyone into silence. The guards immediately released me, stepping back in fear. Even Helen took the opportunity to flee.
Gina’s face drained of color. Her eyes widened in surprise. She bowed her head and curtsied. "Your highness," she mumbled, her voice shaking.
I couldn’t hold back my tears any longer. My body shivered uncontrollably as I cried. The ache in my chest grew stronger. I couldn't take it - the betrayal, the humiliation, it was all too much. Ferris looked down at me. His eyes softened for a moment before they hardened again as he turned his attention to Gina.
"How dare you?" he demanded. From the corner of my eye, I could see Gina flinch.
She bowed her head, unable to meet his gaze. "I’m sorry, your grace," she whiepred. Her arrogance and confidence had vanished, replaced by fear.
Ferris took a step forward and walked closer to her "If you ever try to harm Elise again, I will make sure you regret it. Do you understand?"
Gina nodded "Yes, your highness. I’m sorry." With a final glare, Ferris turned his back on her. He wrapped his arms around me and took me away from the scene of my humiliation.
My head rested against his chest, and I could hear the steady beat of his heart. The further we got from Gina and her guards, the safer I felt.
"I’m so sorry you had to go through that," Ferris murmured "I should have been there sooner." I shook my head, unable to find the words. The fear and humiliation I felt were still fresh, but Ferris’s presence soothed me.
When we got back to his residence, he took me back the room I stayed in. "Are you okay?" he asked softly, brushing a strand of hair from my face.
"Rafael!" I called. My attendant appeared almost instantly. "Yes, your highness?" Rafael spoke, bowing his head.
"I want the press outside my residence. Now," I commanded "I want to address them"
"Yes, sir. Right away." He turned and left the room. I sank into my chair, trying to calm the anger inside me. Elise had been through enough. She deserved to feel safe, to know that someone would protect her. And I would be damned if I let anyone hurt her again.
Minutes felt like hours as I waited for Rafael to return. In a short while, he finally came.
"The media is assembled outside, Alpha." "Good," I said, rising to my feet and heading towards the door.
