Alexander turned to her, furrowing his brow. A moment passed, he said nothing, studying her face as if trying to decipher her emotions. His response finally came, calmer than Emma had expected.

“What do you mean?” he asked, faint confusion etched in his tone. “I had nothing to do with this house. I believe that It’s a gift from my mother to you.”

Emma blinked, taken aback. “Your mother?”

Alexander stepped closer, his expression softening further. His soft cologne hit her nostrils, bringing to life a part of her that she had wished was long dead. “You thought I was trying to take our kids away from you.” he said, almost reading her mind.

She swallowed hard as emotions swirled in her stomach. “Since it’s truly from mother, then… I’ll accept it.”
