Dominic sat beside the bed and gently held Lily's wrist, trying to take her pulse. Fred once witnessed a pulse-taking before and knew how remarkable it was. Although it was hard to comprehend it from the viewpoint of mainstream medicine, it had somehow proven effective.

Left alone with Lily, Dominic held her hand gently and saw her wrist was so thin and pale that he could almost see the veins. She had been through so much. She had suffered when she was pregnant, and even after she had given birth, her torment did not end.
