“Maja, keeping busy as usual! Did Dean make it back yet?” a neighbor called over the fence.

Maja tried to keep her response cool—she always kept a bit of distance from everyone—but after seeing the same faces every day, it was hard not to soften. “No, he went into town for supplies. He’ll be back tonight.”

The neighbor, also rushing to hang out her own laundry, chatted easily about the weather and the harvest. This kind of simple, neighborly life was new to Maja. At first, the language barrier had made everything awkward, but after all this time, she’d picked up the local dialect and could chime in now when she wanted.

Suddenly, one guy turned to him. “Dean, you and Maja must be getting married soon, right? Her family came looking for her.”

Dean frowned. “Her family?”

The guy nodded. “From her country. They showed up in our village with her picture, asking around. Everyone knows you two are getting hitched, so we figured you’d invited them.”
