“It was Emmery who helped her. Whenever someone in the Nettleton family messed up, Emmery sorted them out.”

A friend at the back snickered, “So if we don’t treat Annie well, you think our boss will come after us too?”

“No chance,” the guy up front said confidently. “Boss would never even let us near Annie in the first place.”

They kept walking, laughter fading as a small cabin appeared ahead.

All eight friends froze, instantly alert. They signaled to each other, shut off their flashlights, and moved in silent sync, creeping closer and surrounding the cabin.

At the door, they could tell someone had gone inside.

Guns up, nerves tight, they edged toward the entrance.

Inside, Maja lay on the bed, jaw clenched, eyes glued to the door. She could feel someone coming.

Her gun was empty, but it was all she had—maybe it would be enough to bluff.

Suddenly, the door slammed open. The guy who kicked it in ducked back, wary of a gunshot.

Nothing happened. For a moment, everyone thought the place was empty.

Then another man slipped inside, eyes going wide as he spotted Maja. “No way. We actually found her?”

They’d been searching forever, and now, out of nowhere, on a quiet night, she was just here?

For a second, they all wondered if it was a trick of the light.

But there she was, gun raised. No doubt about it.

“You guys?!” Maja blurted out, recognizing Conner’s crew.
