Anya poked at her food with a toothpick, chatting away as she ate. She wandered over to Leo, peering at his computer screen over his shoulder. “Jeez, that’s dark. What are you even looking at?” She sliced up an apple and offered a piece to Leo.
Leo didn’t look away. “The Dark Web homepage.”
Inside the Dark Web’s hideout, things were less cozy. Miles lounged in a chair, watching as Dean lay sprawled on the floor, only half-awake. Someone dumped a bucket of cold water over Dean’s face, snapping him back to reality.
“The last time Maja risked it all for someone, it was Emmery,” Miles commented, voice casual.
Dean’s voice was raspy, barely more than a whisper after days of captivity. “Emmery—was he her husband?”
“Fiancé. They never made it to the wedding. Her brother-in-law took him out first,” Miles said with a crooked smile.
A couple of men strode past the doorway. “Miles, Conner’s car just showed up on the perimeter.”
Miles glanced down at the battered Dean and smirked. “Look at you—got Maja and Conner working together for once.”
He got up and barked an order. “Take care of Conner’s men. Bring Maja to me, and only her.”
“Yes, sir.”
Up in the mountains, four SUVs sped along the twisting roads, radios buzzing as the teams checked in. “Armor up, everyone. If things go sideways, just play dead.” They were heading straight into Dark Web territory, not even sure where the real base was. Everyone knew the enemy would throw everything they had at them.
One guy grumbled, “Boss, we know the Dark Web’s going to tear us apart, so why are we strapping on vests and walking right in?”
The team leader shot him a look. “Quit whining. If we’re going to put on a show, we do it right. Let the Dark Web win one at their own front door. Try to act professional for once.”
Maja sat in the back, eyeing the men she was stuck with and frowning. Conner’s crew had been driving her nuts for days. One minute they were absolute idiots, the next they snapped into deadly seriousness. They’d crack a joke in the middle of a firefight and then take down an enemy without missing a beat.
