They made her take off her shoes, and there it was—tucked deep in the sole—a tiny black tracker. “Ms. Maja, care to explain what this is?”

Maja herself had no clue when Conner’s people had slipped that tracker into her shoe. “Take me to see Dean,” she demanded.

They ushered her onto a plane. That’s when it hit her: the coordinates from earlier had just been bait, a trick to throw them off. The real Dark Web wasn’t hiding in these mountains at all.

She cursed Conner’s team under her breath, but she had to admit—she hadn’t expected the Dark Web to be this crafty.

“Dark Web’s got some serious moves,” she muttered.

“If not, Ms. Maja, why did you try to team up with them in the first place?” someone shot back.

Maja smirked, “Guess I gave you too much credit. But let’s be honest—you still haven’t come close to touching Andre, let alone laying a finger on Conner. Not so impressive after all.”

No one wanted to keep that argument going.

“Did you kill Mr. Kon?” someone else asked.

“He didn’t want to play ball,” Maja answered coolly.

“Because he kidnapped your sister?”

Maja went quiet. “No! Because he was an idiot.”

“Ms. Maja, they say you always have to listen to a woman in reverse. So does that mean you did it because Mr. Kon kidnapped your sister?”

The signal from the tracker vanished. Everyone turned to look at Conner. “Boss, you think they found the tracker?”

That tracker on Maja was just a red herring. The real plan? Those guys who went in with her weren’t just there to back her up—they were supposed to start a fight. It was just a cover, so they could slip a real tracker onto one of the Dark Web people.

After all, Maja had to go through a full-body scan to get in. But no one on the Dark Web side would ever suspect they might be carrying a tracker themselves.
