Maja was searched again, but there was no tracker—at least not one they could find. Still, it was clear the enemy was on their way.

Miles narrowed his eyes. “Did anyone from our team actually touch Conner’s people during the last job?”

A nervous nod from his subordinate. “Yeah, there was contact.”

Everyone was rounded up, and they brought out the clothes from that day. A scan turned up a tiny tracker sewn right into the fabric.

The realization hit Maja in a cold wave. So that was Conner’s real plan—“sacrificing” his guy wasn’t about losing a man, it was about using her as a decoy. Whether she stayed hidden or played dead, the actual goal was physical contact, planting a tracker, and finding their base.

A weak, bitter smile flickered across her lips. She couldn’t help thinking of Emmery.

She was lying on the ground when Dean crawled over to her.

“Maja, your hand—” Dean’s fingers were sticky with dried blood, shaking as he tried to check on her.

“I’m sorry, Dean.” Her voice was soft.

It was because of her that Dean’s quiet life had been blown apart by all this.

Dean glanced at her hand. “That ring… it means a lot to you, doesn’t it?”

“Yes.” Maja didn’t hesitate. “It’s the last thing he gave me.” So for that last piece of memory, she was willing to risk everything.

Dean let out a tired, almost wistful laugh. “I never realized you used to be the jewel of the city. How’d you end up with someone like me, just a guy from the valley?” He paused, then, almost accusingly, “Why’d you come back after you left?”

“You said you’d hide out in the mountains. So why’d you get caught?”

Dean was spent. He’d never run so far in his life and was exhausted to his core. After Maja left, he’d had nothing left—so he tricked her into going on ahead.

Maja smiled, bittersweet. “You used up all your strength coming back for me, didn’t you? That’s why you couldn’t run anymore.”
