Alex stepped out of the hall, feeling numb, and collapsed onto the garden bench.

He stared blankly ahead, lost in thoughts too dark and heavy to shake. He had no idea how much time had passed before Kelly stormed up beside him.

"Why did you do this, Alex?" Kelly snapped, his voice sharp as a blade.

Alex frowned, puzzled. "Do what?"

"Don't play dumb with me," Kelly hissed, anger blazing in his eyes.

"I know you're a high-ranking Kingswell. Hell, everyone knows you're even above Albert Kingston himself. But that doesn't justify destroying the Guise family!"

"What the hell are you talking about?" Alex shot back, irritation growing in his voice.

"Alex, I know you’re close to the new king. Maybe you're his right-hand man, his private investigator—but you can't exploit the king for your own personal vendetta!"

"Personal vendetta?" Alex growled.

"Everyone at Kingswell knows what's going on," Kelly continued fiercely.

"Gilbert Guise hit Sophia, and now you're abusing your influence to crush his entire family. You've even dragged the king into your revenge. Don't you think you've gone too far?"

Alex clenched his jaw, remembering how he'd unleashed Kingswell operatives across Paris to dig into the Guise family's darkest secrets—and there had been plenty, enough dirt to bury them forever.

Everyone at Kingswell knew—Alex had pulled the trigger that started it all.

"Guise hurt innocent people," Alex said coldly. "They deserve every bit of punishment they get."

"Yeah, and so do half the governors in this damned country!" Kelly shouted, frustration boiling over.

"There's dirt everywhere if you dig deep enough. But this? Destroying the Guise family publicly?”

“The king is already facing backlash from every governor for bending the law like this."

"Why should it matter?" Alex retorted sharply. "Guise broke laws, destroyed lives. People like him deserve to rot."

"That's not how justice works!" Kelly snapped back. "They have to be arrested, put on trial, let a judge decide—"

"You think those judges aren’t bought by Guise?" Alex cut him off, fury erupting.

"They'll walk free in a heartbeat, Kelly, laughing their way out of court with their bribes and inside connections."

"We don't know that for sure, Alex!" Kelly rose to his feet, visibly shaking with anger. "You don’t get to bend the law whenever you damn well please!"

"We both know the old king’s corruption still poisons our government," Alex replied bitterly.

"They're like a cancer, Kelly. We have to cut them out before they destroy the entire nation."

Kelly shook his head slowly, disappointment darkening his expression.

"That's exactly why you're putting the king in danger, Alex. You’re forcing him down a path of tyranny."

Alex felt a chill run down his spine, but he stood his ground. "And what if he doesn't act? He'll be seen as weak, spineless, and corrupt just like them."

"I have to report you to the king," Kelly whispered, his voice heavy with regret.

"Why?" Alex asked coldly, eyes burning into Kelly.

"Because if we allow the king to execute justice outside the law, he'll become a tyrant. We can't let him become another dictator."

Alex went silent, understanding painfully clear.

As king, he was caught between two impossible choices.

He could follow laws infested with corruption, protecting monsters like Guise who raped and murdered without consequence, while innocent men starved and suffered behind bars for stealing bread.

Or he could follow his heart, dispensing true justice, and risk being branded a dictator—a monster himself.

Either path led to ruin. The choice was his alone. Would he become the righteous devil, hunted and hated, or the noble pawn, loved by corrupt men?

“Alex, you've made a terrible mistake!” Kelly snapped, eyes blazing.

“You let your anger over Sophia cloud your judgment. You rushed to the king without even giving him a chance to think it through.”

“You've wiped out the entire Guise family, and now governors from other states are calling meetings, demanding answers about these deaths.”

Kelly stepped closer, his voice low but razor-sharp. “You've thrown the king into deep trouble. He’s already weak without solid support from active governors. Your reckless actions have put him in danger.”

Kelly glared, determination etched on his face. “I’m going to report this to the king. You'd better brace yourself.”

“Fine,” Alex growled back, collapsing into a nearby chair.

Kelly turned away, taking only a single step before pausing.

A soft wind swept through, lifting strands of his hair in a dance of quiet sadness.

Kelly stopped, the wind tugging at his hair. He didn’t look back.

“Tell me, Alex… was I never enough? Or is it just always going to be Sophia?”
