Chapter 18
“That’s your cluc?” Justin asks, frowning and looking between me and Shane. However, I see Cole looking thoughtfully at Shane. The fourth challenge requires patience. I don’t have that, but both Shane and Cole do.
“That’s my clue. Take it or leave it.”
Shane looks at me, and I can see him assessing my comment. He knows me well enough to know our similarities and our differences.
“You didn’t have to do that,” he says.
“You helped me, now I’m returning the favor,” I say.
He shrugs. “You would have done the same for me.”
I smile and finish eating what I can. Then Shane helps me to my room, offering to stay with me.
“I’m going to take my pill, and you have sparring tomorrow,” I say.
“Yeah, and a Beast to overcome because, apparently, I’m better at the fourth level than you are.”
“I think you will be,” I say.
He helps me shower and rewrap my ribs then helps me into bed.
“Sleep well, Tiana.”
“You too, Shane,” I say. Then he gives me my pain pill, watching me swallow it before kissing me goodnight.
“Sleep well,” he says, as he walks to my door.
“You too,” I say, struggling to keep my eyes open and realizing the pain meds are already working.
I’m asleep before he leaves the room.
Shane
Tiana was either still exhausted from being knocked out earlier, or those are the strongest pain
pills in the world. I thought I’d have to wait for them to kick in, but she was out so fast, I didn’t have to wait at all.
Once I was sure she was asleep, I locked her door and headed to my room. On the way, I ran into Alphas Ryan and Dane.
“She’s asleep,” I tell them.
“She didn’t call our parents,” Alpha Ryan says.
“I’m about to call them. She was tired and sore. Dinner and a shower wore her out,” I say.
They both stare at me for a moment. I wait them out.
“Thanks for looking out for her,” Alpha Dane finally says.
“Yeah, thanks,” Alpha Ryan says. “Are you doing better now?”
“Yes. Now that she’s out of the medical center, I’m good. Her entire side is an ugly purple color, but according to Dr. Whit, it could have been worse.”
“I broke my arm on The Beast,” Alpha Rýan says.
”
“I broke a rib. So, yeah, it could be worse,” Alpha Dane says.
