Chapter 178
The silence in the room was almost suffocating once Marceline left. Alejandro remained where he stood, one hand in his pocket, the other flexing at his side.
The echo of her sharp words still lingered, but it wasn’t her lecture that gnawed at him–it was Nivera.
She was out there. Alone.
Whoever was behind this had proven that whether inside or outside the mansion, she wasn’t safe.
His jaw tightened. No. Not again.
Alejandro quickly pulled his phone from his pocket, the glow of the screen lighting his face as he scrolled to Martins‘ number. The line connected on the second ring.
“Boss,” Martins‘ voice came, crisp and alert as always.
Alejandro’s tone was clipped, all business. “She’s out.”
There was no confusion on Martins‘ end. “Understood. You want me to shadow her?”
Alejandro’s gaze drifted to the front door, the faintest tension running through his shoulders. “Not shadow- guard. Keep out of sight, but make sure nothing touches her. No slip–ups, Martins. Last night was one too many.”
“Yes, sir. I’ll assign two of my best to stay on her tail, and they’ll be discreet.”
“Not just her tail,” Alejandro pressed, his voice low and dangerous. “I want to know where she’s going, who she’s meeting, what she says, and what she doesn’t say. Every phone call, every look over her shoulder. If she so much as breathes differently, I want to hear about it first.”
Martins hesitated for only a fraction of a second. “Understood. But, boss–she’s sharp. She’ll notice eyes on her if we’re not careful.”
Alejandro exhaled through his nose, his patience razor–thin. “Then don’t let her notice. But don’t let her out of your sight either. If I find out she was touched again-” His voice hardened into steel. “-you won’t like the consequences.”
There was no protest this time. “It won’t happen. Consider her locked down.”
A silence hung between them before Martins cleared his throat. “And if they’re not after her, sir? If they’re after you through her?”
Alejandro’s jaw ticked. His eyes hardened, the dangerous glint that had made enemies bow before him flashing to life.
That was a possibility.
“They’ve already signed their death warrant; it doesn’t matter whether it’s me or her they are after. But until I

have their name, Nivera is your priority. Keep her safe, keep her close. If she goes to Celeste, I want the names of every person in the same room. If she so much as steps into a store, I want a record of every face that walks in after her.”
“Yes, sir. I’ll tighten the net.”
For a long moment, he stood still, the phone heavy in his hand. He didn’t like this–relying on others to watch her, trusting anyone but himself.
But until he could find out who was behind the attacks, until he could gut the bastard with his own hands, this was the only way to keep her safe.
He had a lot of enemies, but he didn’t think they’d be stupid enough to try and use Nivera again. Well, never
say never.
His fist clenched around the phone, knuckles pale with the force of it. Whoever had touched her, whoever had dared to invade his house, his territory, his woman–they thought they were clever. They thought they could drug him, attack her, and slip past his defenses.
They were wrong.
Dead wrong.
Alejandro slipped the phone back into his pocket, his eyes narrowing as a grim resolve settled in his chest. He would let Martins play watchdog for now.
But sooner or later, he’d find the shadow in the dark. And when he did… he’d make sure they never had the chance to breathe Nivera’s name again.

Inside, the room smelled of leather and expensive cigars, the air heavy with power.
The mystery man sat in the shadows as always, his back reclined in a high–backed chair, his hand lazily swirling a glass of whiskey.
The news flickered on the wide screen opposite him. A headline scrolled beneath the image of a young man in handcuffs, being shoved into the back of a police van.
SILAS MONROE ARRESTED; TRIAL BEGINS; SOURCES POINT TO WIDER RING.
The anchor’s voice was cool and detached, but the words carried enough weight to draw a sharp laugh from Victor, who stood a few feet away.
“Well, well,” Victor said, tilting his head, his scar catching the dim light. “Isn’t that the little bastard who had ties to the Elton girl?”
The mystery man’s gaze slid to the screen, studying the footage with unreadable calm. “Nivera Elton.” The name rolled off his tongue like a curse. He set the glass down with a soft clink. “Yes. They had history.”
Victor smirked, pulling out a cigarette, though he didn’t light it. “History that might be worth resurrecting.

Alejandro’s got his hands full keeping her under control already. The girl’s unraveling. However, he’s not dumb. If he starts sniffing around this, there’s a high chance he’ll sniff us out.”
“Unless we make it, his attention will be fixed squarely where we want it,” the mystery man butted in.
He tapped the armrest of his chair, the only sign he was thinking. He was not a man of wasted words.
His silences were deliberate, sharpened to make others restless. Victor knew better than to push, but he also knew when to fan the fire.
“Think about it,” Victor continued. “He’s the perfect decoy. I can bet my life that Alejandro is the one responsible for him being behind bars. Naturally, his suspicion would be on him…”
A beat of silence, then the man in the chair chuckled low and dangerously. “Convenient. Very convenient.”
Victor allowed himself a small grin. “And while Alejandro is tearing down that prison wall trying to get to the man, we’ll have the perfect window to push harder at the girl. She’s fragile, sir.”
It was his job to update his boss on whether or not everything was going according to plan, and so far, things were going smoothly.
“Delicate in the mind, even if she hides it well. You saw what happened the other night–hyperventilating, panicking at shadows.”
“That’s wonderful,” the mystery man grinned.
“If we keep pressing, it won’t be long before she breaks completely, so we get her where we want her.”
They both watched another frame of Silas’s arrest; the anchor listed alleged charges–human trafficking, coercion, and bribery.
The mystery man leaned forward now, elbows braced on his knees, eyes gleaming with something that looked like hunger but felt colder.
“A broken mind is the easiest to shape. If we shatter her, Alejandro won’t just lose focus–he’ll lose himself.”
Victor chuckled, flicking the unlit cigarette between his fingers. “And when he’s too busy holding her together, too distracted by her screams and her tears, you can strike where it matters.”
The man leaned back once more, thoughtful. “Silas, though… he’s a nobody now. Locked away, powerless.”
“That’s the beauty of it,” Victor interjected quickly. “We don’t need him to do anything. All we need is for Alejandro and Nivera to believe he’s behind it all. Fear does the rest. The girl already questions her sanity.”
