“Yeah, okay.”
Since Aurora had spoken, Craig naturally listened.
The tension between them lingered awkwardly, until Walter came rushing over. “Magnolia, you’re coming home with me—now!”
“I don’t want to! She just bullies Craig because he’s nice! Just because she’s the Lopez family’s golden girl—big deal! She got lucky at birth, that doesn’t mean she’s better than us. Who does she think she is, anyway?”
“At least I’d never fall for a married man.” Compared to Magnolia’s outburst, Aurora’s reply was as cool as ice. But every word hit home.
“You—!”
Walter’s face flushed, clearly embarrassed by his daughter. He quickly waved an apology to Craig and practically dragged Magnolia away.
Just like that, the drama fizzled out.
Aurora suddenly felt a strange sense of embarrassment, though she wasn’t sure why. She cleared her throat and fished around in the car for the stuff she’d just bought. “Well, I already got these, so you might as well have some.”
“I’m not hungry,” Craig replied quietly.
“Oh. Well, just keep them for later, alright? Eat when you feel like it. I’ll get going—”
“Aurora.” He stopped her, voice low and a little shaky, those blue eyes fixed on her. “Don’t go. Stay with me, please.”
“I know you’ve already moved on, and I’m the one stuck in the past. That’s my fault, not yours. Today… maybe I’m asking too much, but I just really want you to stay with me, just for today,” Craig said, pressing his lips together. “Just one day. Is that okay?”
How could Aurora say no to that? Besides, after all those years calling Amelie “Mom,” she knew, deep down, she ought to be here for Craig.
“Alright. I’ll help you take care of things today.”
“Mr. Turner, Aunt Karen,” Miles greeted, taking the bowl from Jeffrey. “Here, let me.”
Jeffrey grinned, giving Miles a teasing wink. “Better get all those ‘Mr. Turners’ in while you can. Pretty soon, you won’t be calling me that anymore!”
Miles blinked, then realized what he meant. “You always told my dad you wanted to steal me for your family when I was a kid. Guess soon enough I’ll be calling you ‘Dad’ for real, huh?”
“Hmph! If I’d known you’d actually run off with my daughter, I’d have shipped Felicity off to boarding school when she was five—never let you two meet!” Jeffrey huffed, though his eyes were twinkling. “But it’s too late for all that now!”
Everyone burst out laughing.
Elijah, not really understanding but wanting in on the fun, squinted his eyes and giggled along.
Dorothy gently ruffled his hair. “Let’s hope your future aunt has a safe delivery, sweetheart, and maybe gives you a healthy little cousin to play with soon.”
