"Stop! I only put up with you because you're my mom. Do you really think you're still the queen bee of the Hoffmans? Liliana's chances with the Hoffmans were ruined because of you. You owe her and her mom big time, and you'll never be able to make it right."

Charles massaged his temples. "I don't want to talk about who's right and who's wrong. This is my last warning, Mom. Leave Aunt alone and stop threatening Dad, or you'll make me lose the last shred of patience I have."

Turning away from Clarisse, Charles saw James descending the stairs and asked, "James, where's Grandpa?"

"Sir Shaw went out today to hang out with some buddies. He's not back yet!" James replied, scanning the room to gauge everyone's mood before adding cautiously, "Mr. Charles, are you heading out?"

"Yeah, I've got stuff to do. Since Grandpa and Dad are out, make sure Aunt's taken care of. Uncle's out on business and might be gone for a while. Aunt's resting in her room, so have someone stand guard. No one's to bother her until Uncle's back, or they'll face the consequences.”

Janet's face fell, her lips quivering. "Aunt, you're being mean to me. How can you say that? You promised you'd help me get together with Charles. I can't let this go. I have to stop him."

With that, Janet bolted from the Hoffman family's old house, her feet pounding the ground faster than anyone had seen before. "Charles, wait for me! Please, don't leave!"

Janet caught hold of Charles's sleeve just as he was about to pull open the car door. "Charles, you just got here, and you're already leaving? Isn't this your home? I've been in Brookville for months, and you've barely hung out with me. Charles, remember! I'm your fiancée!" She wrapped her arms around his waist and looked up at him with big, pleading eyes. "Please stay, Charles, or at least take me with you! We could grab dinner, and then I could visit your place. What do you say?"
