Chapter 1003

Halsey chuckled. “Did something just click for you two?”

Warren looked at Halsey in disbelief, then turned to Shaun. “Did you guys already figure out that Gilbert and Chelsea were going to make a move tonight? So you played along on purpose?”

Shaun nodded. “That’s right.”

A few hours earlier, Shaun and Halsey had been in the study when Shaun got a call from Warren.

Shaun had turned him down right away. It was late, and no amount of money was more important than Halsey and his baby. He was staying home to be with them.

However, Halsey wrapped her arms around his neck and insisted that he go to the company.

Someone as alert as Shaun sensed something was off immediately.

“Why do you insist that I go to the office?” he asked. “It feels like you’re hiding something.”

་་

Halsey smiled sweetly at him. “Like what?”

Shaun frowned. “Like… I seriously think you’re trying to get me out of the way so you can sneak off again.” That made Halsey laugh. “Do you seriously think I’ll run off?”

Shaun nodded with a straight face. “Yup. You’ve already taken off on your own a bunch of times, and I had to go bring you back.”

Halsey felt a pang in her chest, but she smiled and said, “Do you believe me when I say I’ve been here the whole time? I never left.”

Shaun narrowed his eyes. “What are you trying to say?”

Halsey took a deep breath. “I never tried to hurt you. This whole thing is Gilbert’s doing. He and Chelsea are working together. Now that you’ve proposed to me, Chelsea can’t take it anymore, and I’m sure they’re planning to act tonight. Warren’s call just now proves it-they’re still using him without him even realizing it.”

Shaun pressed his lips together and looked at Halsey, his eyes unreadable.

Nervous, Halsey whispered, “Give me a chance. Let me prove it to you.”

“Alright,” Shaun said.

Halsey blinked in surprise. “That was easy.”

“Because I trust you,” Shaun said softly, “and I’ll believe whatever you say.”

That touched her deeply. Trust and understanding were the foundation of any lasting relationship. After everything they’d been through-all the lies and misunderstandings-Shaun still trusted her without question.

That meant everything

“This scheme of Gilbert’s started three years ago. All we need to do now is play along and not tip them off,” Halsey said seriously.

Shaun asked, “What’s your plan?”

“You don’t need to do anything right now,” she said. “Just go to the company. Once you’re gone, Gilbert and Chelsea will definitely make a move. They’ll come after me.”
