Halsey froze.

She was already pregnant. There was no way she could take that!

She shook her head. “I’m not taking it.”

Shaun looked at her and curved his lips into a smile. “What do you mean? I didn’t use any protection last night. I’m healthy and fertile. If you don’t take the pill, what happens if you end up pregnant?”

Halsey spoke, “I-”

But Shaun cut her off. “Or… Do you want to get pregnant with my child?”

Halsey was completely speechless. This was a lose-lose situation. She couldn’t take the pill-it would harm the baby she was already carrying. But if she refused, Shaun would think she was doing it on purpose.

“I…” Halsey hesitated.

“There’s a pharmacy right up ahead,” Shaun said. He pulled over and parked the car, then opened the passenger door. “Come on out.”

He was really going to buy it.

Halsey gripped the seatbelt tightly, not wanting to move.

Shefaleaned on the doorframe and narrowed his eyes. “What’s the deal? Keep acting like this, and I’ll seriously start to think you re trying to get pregnant. Are you…trying to steal my genes?”

“I am not!” Halsey snapped. She had no intention of stealing anything!

“Mr. Lane,” she huffed, “you’re so full of yourself.”

Shaun chuckled.

“I’m not full of myself; I’m just being realistic. I’m handsome and rich-my genes are in high demand. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone wanted to ‘accidentally’ have my kid and raise it alone.”

Halsey’s heart skipped. She indeed planned to do that

Shaun wasn’t wrong. His genes were top-notch. Both he and Madeline were brilliant, high-IQ academic elites. On top of that, he was good-looking and wealthy. His genetic profile was probably the kind that would be fought over at a donor bank.

The woman chuckled. “Not ready for kids, huh? Newlyweds?”

She thought they were a married couple.

Halsey quickly explained, “Oh, you’ve got it wrong. We’re not—”

But before she could finish, Shaun slipped an arm around her shoulders and smiled. “That’s right. My wife’s not ready to have kids yet.”
