When Shaun returned, the first thing he saw was Halsey curled up on the couch, completely relaxed and fast asleep.

He set down the files in his hand, loosened the tie around his neck, and took a seat beside her.

Reaching out, he gently patted her soft cheek. “Wake up, sleepyhead.”

Halsey shifted, her slender frame moving closer to him as she snuggled up like a little cat. “Shh. I’m sleeping,” she mumbled.

Shaun looked at her and couldn’t help but smile. Her delicate face was flushed from sleep, a rosy pink like she had on blush. She looked sweet and soft, almost childlike.

He leaned back on the couch and pulled her into his arms.

Sensing his warmth, Halsey instinctively found a more comfortable spot in his embrace and kept sleeping.

Shaun draped a blanket over her, then held her with one arm while using the other to go through paperwork.

Just then, Martin walked in. “Mr. Lane-”

Shaun gave him a sharp look. “Shhh. Keep it down.”

Only then did Martin notice Halsey. He quickly lowered his voice. “Sorry.”

“What is it?” Shaun asked.

“Ms. Sutton and Warren are here,” Martin replied.

Shaun’s expression didn’t change. His voice remained calm. “I’m not available right now. Tell them to come back another time.”

“Okay.”

Martin turned and headed back out. Outside the office, Chelsea and Warren were waiting.

Chelsea frowned. “Shaun’s in there, right? I’m going in.”

She stepped forward.

But Martin moved to block her path. “I’m sorry. Mr. Lane says he’s not available to take guests right now.”

Warren raised a brow. “Why not? Didn’t his meeting just end?”

Chelsea added, “We’re not strangers. Shaun wouldn’t refuse to see us.”

She tried to walk past him again.

But Martin stood firmly in front of the door. “I’m really sorry, but Mr. Lane made it clear-he’s unavailable right now. You’ll have to come another day. If it’s urgent, I can pass a message along.”

Martin was already sweating. He knew Chelsea and Warren were important, but today… Halsey had shown up.

And when Halsey was around, nobody else mattered to Shaun.

Chelsea narrowed her eyes, suspicion rising. “Is there someone else in the office?”

Warren looked doubtful as well. “Who’s in there? Who could Shaun possibly be seeing that he won’t meet with us?”

Martin didn’t dare say. “I’m sorry. I really can’t tell you that.”

Chelsea’s expression darkened. “It’s Ms. Mallin, isn’t it?”

Martin hesitated. “Uh…”

Chelsea let out a cold laugh. “Don’t even try to deny it. It has to be her. That’s the only reason Shaun wouldn’t see us.”

Warren frowned. “What’s Halsey doing here again?”

Chelsea shoved Martin aside. “Move! We’re going in right now.”

“Yeah!” Warren added. “We want to see for ourselves what Ms. Mallin is doing here.”

Martin couldn’t stop them. Chelsea pushed open the office doors, and she and Warren stormed inside.

“Shaun, why-“Chelsea began to speak, clearly worked up.

But she didn’t get the chance to finish. Shaun lifted his eyes, his sharp gaze cutting straight through her with chilling force.

Chelsea froze on the spot. Every word she had wanted to say died in her throat.

Then, she saw Halsey, who was still asleep, curled up in Shaun’s arms.
