Chapter 398: The Empty Vessel

After burning everything in the name of their gods, they ended their own lives in a mass suicide, leaving behind a world without faith.

Primrose never imagined that those fallen gods from thousands years ago, erased from history itself, would somehow be tied to Leofric.

"But maybe it was partly my fault," Leofric said with a weary sigh. "So ... I suppose I deserve this curse."

Primrose didn’t quite understand what he meant, but before she could ask, Lorelle spoke first.

"Then it doesn’t matter anymore," she said softly.

Her eyes glistened, not with tears, but with resolve. "Maybe becoming a ghost is my answer," Lorelle whispered. "If I die, I’ll just repeat this damn curse all over again ... but if I stay behind as a spirit, maybe I can finally break free from it."

Leofric sighed. "Lorelle ..."

She smiled faintly. "If the gods are gone, then I’ll just defy their laws myself."

[I hate this curse too, but it seems I can never erase what I feel for him,] Lorelle thought to herself. [Maybe this is for the best.]

Primrose had never heard of anyone who became a ghost and could still be seen by the living. Normally, spirits faded, unseen and forgotten, a mere whisper in the wind.

But then Naveer spoke up. "There might be a way," she said. "If Lady Lorelle truly wants to stay, we could transfer her soul into a clay statue shaped in her likeness."

Lorelle turned to her. "A statue?"

Naveer nodded. "Yes. I know a sculptor, someone whose hands are skilled enough to carve a vessel that resembles a living body. If the material is pure and the ritual done under the right moon, it might hold her spirit long enough."

Leofric’s expression darkened. "What if the statue breaks? Does that mean her soul would disappear?"

"It’s impossible for a soul to truly vanish," Naveer explained calmly. "The worst that could happen is that she might turn into an evil spirit once her vessel is destroyed or if the bond breaks suddenly. However ..." she looked toward Lorelle. "... that can be prevented with proper protection magic."

"Yes, I can perform a protection spell." Leofric let out a harsh sigh. "But wouldn’t letting her live in a lifeless body be the same as killing her? Can we at least move her soul into a human body maybe every few years?"

Lorelle’s eyes widened. "Are you a fucking idiot?!" she snapped. "If I keep moving from one body to another, it’s like waiting for someone to die just so I can keep living! And what if the person whose body matches mine lives for decades? What will you do then? Kill her?"

Leofric gritted his teeth, saying nothing, only staring at her in silence. But even without words, Lorelle could tell that he wouldn’t hesitate to do it if it meant saving her.

"No!" she shouted. "I don’t want you killing someone just to keep me alive! If the clay statue is the answer, then so be it! Besides, I trust your protection magic will be strong enough to keep it from breaking apart."
