Patti Yale had always believed there was nothing in her life she needed to hide.

When she’d just returned home and bumped into Hawthorne, he’d handed her a cool two million dollars, telling her to spend it however she liked. What else could that mean, except that he cherished her above all?

With this certainty, even when Patti was quietly stealing Hawthorne’s company secrets, she never took him too seriously. She was convinced that, no matter what she did, Hawthorne would turn a blind eye.

“Ma’am, we’d appreciate it if you could respect the museum rules. I’m sure you’ve seen the signs—everyone here is an adult and responsible for their actions.

All our exhibits are protected national treasures. You’re welcome to look, but photography is strictly forbidden. It’s the policy.

If you insist on ignoring the rules, we’ll have to ask you to leave.”

Patti nearly burst out laughing, as if she’d just heard the punchline to some ridiculous joke.

But when the security guards got serious—one dialing the police, the other calling in backup to escort her out—she realized they weren’t bluffing.

Each guard looked like they could bench-press a small car. Towering, with muscles like steel cables, they were every bit as intimidating as her own bodyguards back home.

And with no one at her side, even Patti felt a flicker of fear.

To make matters worse, Hawthorne wasn’t picking up her calls. There was absolutely no way to call in reinforcements.

“Fine, fine! I’ll delete everything I took. No more pictures, alright?”

Right then and there, in full view of the staff, Patti erased every photo she’d just taken. She even opened her phone’s trash folder and cleared it out for good measure.

Hawthorne frowned. “Unless it’s really serious, they usually don’t. Whoever’s in charge today should be handling it. What happened?”

So he didn’t know after all. Gwyneth hesitated, then decided to tell him anyway.

“A woman tried to photograph all the exhibits and got into an argument with the staff.”

“All the items in that show are protected national artifacts. No one’s allowed to take pictures or share them privately. I trust the team will handle it.”

Hawthorne couldn’t imagine who would be bold—or reckless—enough to cause trouble at one of his venues.

“Mrs. Everhart, I’ll make some calls right away. Since you’re there, could you help keep an eye on things?”
