“But it’s been days now. All the evidence is gone, and even if I went to the police, nothing would stick. It would just waste time and energy. She pulled back before things went too far, so I figure she’s made up for it. I don’t want to pursue it any further–as long as I move out, that’s enough.”

After spending this time together, Ivy had gotten a pretty good sense of Roberta’s situation.

“Her family’s pretty average, nothing special. She works hard, got into grad school on a scholarship, and it hasn’t been easy for her to get this far. I don’t want to blow this up and ruin her future.”

Jamison looked at her in surprise. “Since when did you get so soft–hearted?”

Ivy let out a quiet sigh. “Maybe I have… A while back, I would have made a huge deal out of this–I’d have called the cops, gone to the university, made sure she was expelled, wrecked her whole future. But now…”

if you can show someone mercy, you should. There’s no need to push people over the edge. If I completely destroy her future, who knows–maybe one day she’d come after me out of desperation. I really don’t need to make more enemies for myself.” In truth, what mattered most was that Ivy didn’t think Roberta was a bad person at heart. She actually had potential.

Given that, Ivy was willing to let it go–call it a good deed for her own conscience.

“If you’re sure about this, I’ll back you up. Moving out is the right call. I’ll have Boyd look for a place near campus. You shouldn’t go back there tonight.”

Ivy blinked in surprise. “But there’s no way I can move out tonight.”

“Just stay at a hotel for now.”

She stared at him, momentarily at a loss for words.

He really was a man of action.

“I’ll go with you. I’ll head back to work early in the morning–it won’t mess up my schedule.” Jamison had already made all the arrangements, and just then, their food arrived.

“Let’s eat first.”

Ivy nodded. She really was hungry, and there’d be time to worry about everything else later.

Halfway through dinner, Boyd called.

“Uncle, we’re keeping an eye on Emma–nothing unusual so far. As for housing, there’s a complex just across the street from Neo Haven University’s east gate. It was built for faculty, not open to the public, but I pulled some strings and got a two–bedroom apartment–about 900 square feet. That should be enough for Ivy, right?”

Boyd worked fast–he’d secured a place in the time it took to eat dinner, and it was one of the university’s own faculty apartments.

“Great, send me the details. I’ll go take a look in a bit.”

“Will do.”

Having overheard, Ivy couldn’t help but admire, “You guys are amazing. I can’t believe you managed to get a faculty apartment.”

Jamison gave a faint smile. “You should’ve told me about this sooner. T you wouldn’t have had to run around all day by yourself.”

Ivy made a face. “I didn’t think it was that serious, and you’re busy with work. If I’d told you, you’d just have dropped everything to come over, and that wasn’t necessary.”

“It was. Nothing’s more important than you.”

Ivy bit back a smile, her heart filled with warmth and reassurance.

“And one more thing–come with me to the hospital later for a full check–up.” He was still worried that her old roommate hadn’t told the whole truth, and wanted to make sure Ivy was okay.

“No need. As soon as I found out about this, I went to the hospital for tests right away–everything’s fine.” As she spoke, she pulled out a medical report from her bag. “See for yourself.”

Jamison’s eyes widened in surprise, but he took the paperwork and flipped through it carefully.

“Still anemic…”

“Yeah, that’s an old issue. Nothing serious.”
