Ivy knew Jamison was still at work, and she didn’t want to disturb him. Lying back on the hospital bed, she said coldly, “Go on, do what you need to. I’m tired.”

Jamison stood there, his face stormy, glancing at his wife several times as if he wanted to say something but held back. In the end, he left the room without another word.

Once the door closed, Ivy rolled over to stare at the ceiling, quietly fuming.

She understood–nobody’s perfect. Even the best partner can’t agree with you on everything. But when it came to her career, the thing she cared most about, Jamison always seemed to be on a different page. That was what truly frustrated

her.

Maybe Edmond really did have feelings for her. But even if she changed jobs for something more stable, would that really solve anything?

He was carrying a massive bouquet of tulips–bigger and more beautifully wrapped than the one Edmond had sent.

“You like flowers, right? I’ll bring you some every day from now on,” he said, holding the bouquet out to her.

Ivy glanced at the flowers, unimpressed.

Was this really what their argument this morning had been about–flowers?

He was dodging the real issue, and it was painfully obvious he didn’t want to face it head–on.

“Just put them over there,” she said, nodding toward a table.

“You sure you don’t want to take a look? They’re beautiful.”

“I can see them from here.”

She answered every question, but her unhappiness was plain on her face.

Jamison noticed.

But after seeing Edmond today, and realizing that man had feelings for his wife, Jamison found it impossible to just ignore it all.

They ate together in silence.

Then Jamison’s phone rang. It was a call from his department.

He finished the call and turned to Ivy. “I have to head back downstairs. Get some rest. You’ve got a few more tests this afternoon, and if I’m free, I’ll come with you.”

She was scheduled to be discharged tomorrow, but they needed to make sure she was fully recovered.

After all, she’d lost an organ–she’d have to come back regularly for checkups.

Ivy almost told him not to bother, but she couldn’t bring herself to push him away completely. After a moment’s hesitation, she nodded.

But when it came time for her afternoon tests, Jamison didn’t show.

She figured he must have been caught up at work, so she didn’t call him. Instead, she had the nurse’s aide go with her.

Just as the last test was wrapping up, Jamison finally arrived, still in his scrubs, obviously just off the operating table.

“There was a sudden emergency in surgery. I got delayed,” he said, coming over and -taking her hand, his voice low.

Ivy nodded, waiting for the doctor to finish putting away the equipment before she wiped off the gel and sat up.

“Go take care of your work I’ve got this,” she said, straightening her clothes and preparing to head back to her room.

Jamison watched her silently and walked beside her.
